The airstrikes were followed up with artillery fire which killed a mother and daughter...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eEnglish/Nat\u003cbr/\u003eIsraeli military aircraft are reported to have staged a series of air raids on the edge of the Israeli-occupied zone in southern Lebanon. \u003cbr/\u003eThe airstrikes were followed up with artillery fire which killed a mother and daughter as they slept in an almost deserted village near the front line dividing the security zone from the rest of Lebanon.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd Lebanese guerrillas retaliated by firing scores of rockets into northern Israel which struck the border town of Kiryat Shemona.\u003cbr/\u003eThe escalating hostilities came a day after the Israeli army began to dismantle its positions in south Lebanon in preparation for a promised pull-out by July 7.\u003cbr/\u003eThe attacks coincided with the arrival in Beirut of U-N Secretary-General Kofi Annan's special envoy, Terje Roed-Larsen in Beirut to discuss the Israeli withdrawal with Lebanese leaders.\u003cbr/\u003eDuring the overnight Israeli attacks, one rocket struck the car of Abbas Hallal, a local commander of the Amal guerrilla group.\u003cbr/\u003eThe car was parked outside his house on the outskirts of Habboush village in Iqlim al-Tuffah, a guerrilla stronghold facing the occupied zone.\u003cbr/\u003eShrapnel wounded Hallal's 53-year-old mother Jamileh Makkeh, who was reported to be inside the house. \u003cbr/\u003eFive other civilians were injured in the attack, which set the car ablaze. \u003cbr/\u003eIt was not clear where Hallal was at the time. \u003cbr/\u003eIn a separate incident, Israeli artillery fire killed a mother and daughter as they slept in the almost deserted village of Quotrani near the front line in southern Lebanon\u003cbr/\u003eHezbollah said in a statement that it had accurately shelled an Israeli outpost in retaliation for the airstrikes.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd later in the day, guerrillas fired scores of rockets into northern Israel which struck the border town of Kiryat Shemona.\u003cbr/\u003eThere was no immediate word on any casualties from the guerrilla action. \u003cbr/\u003eThe renewed fighting came as U-N Secretary General Kofi Annan's special Middle East envoy, Terje Roed Larsen, arrived in Beirut after a week long visit to Israel. \u003cbr/\u003eDuring his three-day stay, he will be holding talks with Lebanese officials on the Israeli withdrawal plans and the role of UNIFIL, (the U-N Interim Force In Lebanon) in Southern Lebanon.\u003cbr/\u003eLarsen said the U-N had no intention of taking over the role filled by Israeli forces in the event of a pullout from Lebanon.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English)\u003cbr/\u003e\"Peacekeepers are not in Lebanon to defend or protect the state of Israel.
