facelift to the world largest sitting Buddha statue.\u003cbr/\u003eAllegedly eighteen metres higher than their one time Bamiyan counterparts, the Leshan Giant\u003cbr/\u003eBuddha in China's southern province of Sichuan Province is 1200 years old.\u003cbr/\u003eCarved on a cliff face at the confluence of three rivers the Min River, Dadu River and Qingyi River, the spectacular project took 90 years to complete.\u003cbr/\u003eBegun in the year 713 AD the statue was finished in 803 AD.\u003cbr/\u003eThe work was initiated by a monk called Haitong who organized fundraising and hired workers.\u003cbr/\u003eSeventy one metres high in total, the Buddha's head is 15 metres, 10 metres in diameter, with 1021 hair rolls, one ear measures 7 metres, the nose 5.6 metres, whilst the eyes situation.\u003cbr/\u003eMoss and wild bushes grew on the Buddha's feet, hands and shoulders.\u003cbr/\u003eThe site will remain open to visitors during the renovations but access along the cliff to the feet of the Buddha has been closed for security reasons.\u003cbr/\u003eMost of the work will be done by hand due to the location and the nature of the carving.\u003cbr/\u003eIn order to restore the Buddha to its past glory and appearance, special material and\u003cbr/\u003etechniques are employed, under the specifications of the National Relics bureau.\u003cbr/\u003eAlluvion sand from the nearby Mingjiang river is grounded here by hand in a very basic mortar before being mixed with natural die. \u003cbr/\u003eThe mix will ultimately be plastered on the statue, giving it this flesh color.\u003cbr/\u003eThe bigger holes over the body will be filled employing natural fiber such as the jute in those bags.\u003cbr/\u003eTraditional material and manual labour only will be used.\u003cbr/\u003eThe renovation will be paid partially by the State and partially with funds from the local government bureau and state relics bureau.\u003cbr/\u003eHaitong, the monk who engineered the lunatic project, hoped that the Buddha's presence would subdue the swift local river current and protect the boatmen.\u003cbr/\u003eLeshan's Great Buddha was listed on the UN World Heritage List
