Various exteriors of Baskerville Hall\u003cbr/\u003eFans of the fictional detective Sherlock Holmes are being given the chance to own the old mansion that is said to have inspired the \"Hound of the Baskervilles\".\u003cbr/\u003eBaskerville Hall is currently up for sale for �3 million ($4.5 million USD).  \u003cbr/\u003eThis isn't Dartmoor in Devon - the setting for the fictional Baskerville Hall - but a slice of Wales. \u003cbr/\u003eThis is where the original hall stands that is thought to have inspired Sir Arthur Conan Doyle when writing his world famous novel, The Hound of the Baskervilles.\u003cbr/\u003eThe book features Doyle's famous pipe-smoking, deerstalker-wearing detective, Sherlock Holmes who is called in to investigate a death threat against Sir Henry Baskerville that is rooted in the legend of a supernatural hellhound. \u003cbr/\u003eAccording to the current owner of Baskerville Hall, which still bears the Baskerville family's coat of arms, Doyle knew the  family of the same name.\u003cbr/\u003eAlong with his novel \"A Study In Scarlett\", the \"Hound of the Baskervilles\" was extremely important to Doyle. \u003cbr/\u003eHe'd killed off Sherlock Holmes eight years before the Baskervilles novel, but wrote about him again following popular demand for the popular detective's return.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Hall's current owner is David Hodby.\u003cbr/\u003eHe bought the property in the 1980s and transformed it into a hotel, but it still has the characteristics of the old hall which may have stoked Doyle's imagination. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Baskerville archives claim to show signatures of the Baskervilles and Conan Doyle on the same document.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to Hodby: \"Descendants of the people that were working here at the time said that Conan Doyle had stayed here, he was entertained by the family and would go out shooting with the family, they were entertained as friends and he asked permission of the Baskervilles if he could use their family history.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThere are a multitude of claims about what really inspired Conan Doyle's novel, but Hodby is convinced the story of a fearsome hound who stalked the grounds of the old house was prompted by the chilling tale of how neighbouring landowners protected their land in the old days.\u003cbr/\u003eHodby says: \"The Vaughns objected to the walkers crossing their land and used to send out their dogs to chase the walkers away and it is rumoured that one day a couple of walkers trying to escape from the dogs went over a cliff and that started the story of the Vaughn's black hounds.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThere are no hounds and no spine tingling howls echoing around the estate today.\u003cbr/\u003eBut the Baskerville crest, which adorns the building, does depict a speared wolf's head.\u003cbr/\u003eOld black and white photographs reveal how the mansion must have looked a century ago, but it's been updated with electricity and other modern conveniences since then.     \u003cbr/\u003eIt's been on the market for six months without a buyer, but estate agent Michael Rylands is convinced it still has the right appeal.\u003cbr/\u003e\"There are so many houses for sale, not of this calibre or style in this area, but over the country there are a lot and therefore anything that attracts people to the house is a great bonus to us. The Baskervilles go right back to the Norman conquest in 1066, that's their ancestry and when you buy a house of this sort, whether it's a house or hotel, it still has that feeling of history with it.\"\u003cbr/\u003eMany of the rooms still boast their original features, but since the current owner bought the property, paying guests have been able to enjoy its extravagance. \u003cbr/\u003eSherlock Holmes enthusiasts have also visited.\u003cbr/\u003eRoy Upton Holder is the founder of the Deerstalkers of Welshpool, a Sherlock Holmes fan club based in Wales. \u003cbr/\u003eHe says Devon is definitely where the Hound of the Baskerville is set, but he says the house is still of interest.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to Upton Holder: \"It's got the right sort of atmosphere apart from the fact that when you read the book it was a rather desolate sort of building on the moors whereas that one is not.\"\u003cbr/\u003eOn a cold, windy day Baskerville Hall can still evoke a sense of dread and foreboding and it's easy to imagine how it might have inspired a crime thriller featuring blood thirsty hounds.\u003cbr/\u003eClients are reminded: \u003cbr/\u003e(i)
