smuggling attempt.\u003cbr/\u003eOfficials evacuated 732 passengers from the boat, which came to a stop about 20 yards (metres) from the shoreline at Boulouris beach, between the town of Saint Raphael and the French Riviera resort city of Nice on Saturday morning.\u003cbr/\u003eThey were taken in buses to a nearby military camp, where they received medical care.\u003cbr/\u003eNine people were taken to hospital, including a two-day-old baby and his mother, though none were seriously hurt, according to the Ministry for Employment and Solidarity, which oversees health and workers' issues.\u003cbr/\u003eOfficials said they believed the vessel was deliberately beached.\u003cbr/\u003eIt was unclear how many passengers were originally on the boat and evaded authorities by swimming ashore when the boat ran aground in the early morning darkness.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Cambodian-registered boat, East Sea, left Greece and then made a stopover in Turkey, according to local officials.\u003cbr/\u003eMany of its passengers were children, and several babies were born on the vessel.\u003cbr/\u003eOfficials originally believed that as many as 1-thousand-500 people were on board.\u003cbr/\u003eThe head of a civil protection agency in the region said there appeared to be no serious health problems among the refugees, although he described their general physical condition as \"deplorable\".\u003cbr/\u003eThey were forced to stand in the hold of the vessel during the voyage, while many may also be suffering from malnutrition.\u003cbr/\u003eA top regional official told France Info radio that those on board spent eight days at sea in what he called \"precarious sanitary conditions.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe immigrants on the East Sea paid between 500 and 2-thousand U-S dollars for the journey.\u003cbr/\u003eWestern Europe has increasingly become a destination for immigrants from troubled or poorer countries.\u003cbr/\u003eMost immigrant vessels are crammed with people and unfit for long voyages.\u003cbr/\u003eFrench President Jacques Chirac urged the international community to take action against the organisers of immigrant smuggling rings, his office said.\u003cbr/\u003eIn a statement, the Interior Ministry said that refugees who weren't taken to hospital would be turned away from France and returned to their point of boarding if they had no papers.\u003cbr/\u003eThe statement also said requests for asylum would be carried out under the usual procedure, with each immigrant undergoing a private interview with a French refugee
