So one possibility is that he's echo locating on that and he's seeing the behaviour with sound. However, there's another possibility, as well. Maybe he's recognising the characteristic sound of the behaviour, like if I asked you to close your eyes and I clap my hands, you'd still be able to imitate that by recognising the characteristic sound. Dissolve into dolphins flipping\u003cbr/\u003eScientists have long known that dolphins are highly intelligent creatures, capable of a wide range of cognitive functions.\u003cbr/\u003eNow, they can add another to the list: copying each other's behaviour ... all while blindfolded.\u003cbr/\u003eAs it turns out, the practice of \"monkey see, monkey do\" isn't true just for apes. \u003cbr/\u003eDolphins are also master imitators, and they can do it blindfolded.\u003cbr/\u003eThat's according to a recently-published study conducted at the Dolphin Research Centre, a non profit marine mammal research and education facility in Florida Keys.\u003cbr/\u003e\"That whole monkey see, monkey do thing is a complete myth. Dolphins are one of the rare few animals that can imitate,\" says Dr. Kelly Jaakkola (YA'-koe-la), director at the research centre.\u003cbr/\u003eTanner is a young male bottlenose dolphin. The trainers are kitting him out with a pair of soft eyecups to blindfold him. \u003cbr/\u003eUsing a hand chopping signal Tanner is instructed to imitate the other dolphin - called Kibby.\u003cbr/\u003eWithin seconds, both dolphins are splashing water and showing off for the small crowd that has gathered.\u003cbr/\u003eSo how exactly does it work? Tanner uses sound in one of two ways.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Dolphins have this ability to echo locate by sonar, very similar to bats. And so one possibility is he is echo locating on that and he is \"seeing\" the behaviour with sound. However there is another possibility as well. Maybe he's recognising the characteristic sound of the behaviour like if I asked you to close your eyes and I clap my hands, you would still be able to imitate that by recognising the characteristic sound. He could be using either one,\" says Dr. Jaakkola. \u003cbr/\u003ePrevious dolphin studies have shown the mammals can copy other dolphins' whistles, motor behaviours, and computer-generated sounds.\u003cbr/\u003eDolphins also have a capacity to copy humans, but the flexibility in using multiple perceptual routes to imitate has never before been documented in an animal.\u003cbr/\u003eEven with his eyes covered, Tanner is able to copy his friend and playmate nearly every time, even if Kibby performs a different behaviour than what is asked for.\u003cbr/\u003eThe study tested 19 motor and eight vocal behaviours, from waving a fin, to bobbing up and down, spinning and even giggling.\u003cbr/\u003eBecause researchers wanted to focus on whether dolphins can imitate while blindfolded, all the behaviours used in the study were already known to the dolphins. \u003cbr/\u003eBut can dolphins imitate each other naturally? That has yet to be tested.\u003cbr/\u003eDr. Jaakkola says one goal of the research is conservation.\u003cbr/\u003e\"It's human nature to care more about animals we perceive as intelligent.
