Police shooting at miners
On August 16th 2012 South African police officers killed more than 30 armed miners who charged them at a Lonmin-owned platinum mine, authorities said.
The shootings were one of the worst in South Africa since the end of the apartheid era and are seen as deepening the rift between the country's governing African National Congress and an impoverished electorate confronting massive unemployment and growing poverty and inequality.
Police ministry spokesman Zweli Mnisi told the Associated Press on August 17th that more than 30 people were killed.
He said an investigation into the shooting near Marikana, about 70 kilometres (40 miles) northwest of Johannesburg, was underway.
Political parties and labour unions, including the African National Congress (ANC), called for an independent inquiry.
Miners remain defiant, however, despite August 16th's events.
Lonmin had threatened the strikers with dismissal unless they returned to work by August 17th.
Makhosi Mbongane, a 32-year-old winch operator, said mine managers should have come to the workers rather than send police.
Strikers were demanding salary raises from 625 US dollars to 1,563 US dollars.
Mbongane vowed he was not going back to work and would not allow anyone else to do so either.
"They can beat us, kill us and kick and trample on us with their feet, do whatever they want to do, we aren't going to go back to work," he said.
"If they employ other people they won't be able to work either, we will stay here and kill them."
On August 17th, police investigators and forensic experts combed the scene of the shooting, watched by about 100 people.
The South Africa Police Service defended officers' actions, saying in a statement that they were "viciously attacked by the group, using a variety of weapons, including firearms. The police, in order to protect their own lives and in self-defence, were forced to engage the group with force."
Shocked South Africans watched replay after replay of video of the shooting which erupted on the afternoon of August 16th after police failed to get the striking miners to hand over machetes, clubs and home-made spears.
Poor South Africans protest daily across the country for basic services like running water, housing and better health and education - all of which were promised when racist white rule ended with the first democratic elections in 1994.
Protests often turn violent, with people charging that ANC leaders have joined the white minority that continues to enrich itself, while life becomes ever harder for the black majority.
Police often are accused of using undue force.
Even so, August 16th's shooting appalled the country, recalling images of white police firing at anti-apartheid protesters in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s, though in this case it was mostly black police firing at black mine workers.
It remains unclear what sparked the miners' fatal charge at police.
Mnisi, the police ministry spokesman, claimed the miners shot at police as well, using one of the weapons they stole from two policemen whom they beat to death on August 13th.
Mining drives the economy of South Africa, which remains one of the world's dominant producers of platinum, gold and chromium.
Lonmin is the world's third largest platinum producer and its mine at Marikana produces 96 per cent of all its platinum.
The funeral for one of the 34 miners killed by police during a strike outside Lonmin PLC platinum mine was held on August 25th in Marikana.
After a three hour ceremony, John Kutlwano Ledingoane was buried in a graveyard just beyond the fence line of the mine where he worked for years.
He was 24 years old, the only wage earner in his household.
His wife wept as his body was lowered into its final resting place.
He died on August 16th after being shot by police officers and then run over by a riot truck, after police efforts to disperse a crowd of several thousand strikers went wrong.
Ledingoane is survived by his wife and two small children.
The shootings were the worst display of state violence since apartheid ended in 1994 and have thrown the spotlight on growing anger at South Africa's massive inequality, poverty and unemployment
About 270 miners were charged on August 30th with the murders of 34 striking colleagues who were shot by South African police officers.
The decision to charge the miners comes under an arcane Roman-Dutch common purpose law, suggesting that President Jacob Zuma's government wants to shift blame for the killings from police to the striking miners.
Former African National Congress Youth League President Julius Malema told supporters of the miners outside the courthouse that the charges were "madness."
"Police who actually killed those people, none of them is inside," said Malema, who was expelled from the governing African National Congress in April.
"They are now turning things around saying that those people are not killed by those police, they are killed by those comrades, their fellow colleagues, which is madness."
"It's the police who were shooting, but they were under attack by the protesters, who were armed, so today the 270 accused are charged with the murders," said a National Prosecuting Authority spokesman.
The families of those detained are calling for their release.
"All we ask for is for their release, so that we can be able to see them. Why are they being arrested?," asked Itumelang Lepelesana, the sister of a detained miner.
More than 150 of the arrested miners have filed complaints that they have been beaten up in police cells by officers.
The complainants accused police of beating them with batons and fists and kicking and slapping them to force them to give the names of miners who hacked two police officers to death in a week of violence preceding the shootings.
Eight other people were killed, including three miners and two mine security guards whom striking miners burned alive in their vehicle.
The strike, apparently rooted in a rivalry between two trade unions, had rock drill operators demanding a minimum wage of 12,500 rand (1,560 dollars) and complaining that their take-home pay was only about 5,500 rand (688 dollars).
On August 16th, police said they had failed to persuade the strikers to disarm and that it was "D-Day" to end the strike at the London-registered Lonmin PLC platinum mine.
That afternoon, striking miners armed with clubs, machetes and at least one gun allegedly charged at police, who opened fire, killing 34 and wounding at least 78.
Some survivors said many of the miners were fleeing police tear gas and water cannons when they were shot.
No police officers were hurt.
In the fallout from the killings, the bitter mine strike has strengthened. On August 30th Lonmin reported an average of 6-point-6 percent of workers showed up across various shifts.
That's down from 13 percent on August 27th and 50 percent on August 25th.
Lonmin has suffered a serious hit to its share price and has said it probably cannot meet debt payments, due next month, because of the strike.
The police killings of the 34 strikers - the worst display of state violence since apartheid ended in 1994 - have shocked the nation and damaged the reputation of Zuma and his governing ANC, already fractured over Zuma's bid for re-election as party president in December.
The police investigation is separate from a judicial commission of inquiry that Zuma has appointed under a retired Supreme Court judge given wide-ranging powers to investigate whether police used appropriate force. The commission will also probe the actions of government officials and Lonmin.
Dozens of mine workers in South Africa held in connection with the murders of 34 colleagues at a platinum mine were released on September 3rd after charges against them were dropped.
Local media reported that a group of 42 miners were released and that a total of 162 would have the murder charges against them dropped.
The men have been held in detention for several weeks at local prisons after a protest strike turned violent and 34 mine workers were shot and killed by police on August 16th at the Marikana mine.
Shadrack Mtshampa, one of the released miners, said on September 3rd that what happened was "something that I've never seen in my life. It was for the first time that I have seen such a thing. I thought I was already dead because they were shooting tear gas."
"I blame the police for shooting us," he added. "They should have used something like, maybe, tear gas and all kind of things just to stop us, not using real bullets, firing real ammunition, because we couldn't defend ourselves against bullets."
On September 2nd, the National Prosecution Authority (NPA) said they would drop murder charges against many of the men, although other charges in connection with the violence were pending.
The police killings of the 34 strikers - the worst display of state violence since apartheid ended in 1994 - shocked South Africa and damaged the reputation of President Zuma and his governing ANC, already fractured over Zuma's bid for re-election as party president in December.
As party president, he would be guaranteed a second term as president of South Africa.
Zuma's enemies say the police shootings highlight what they say is the party's disregard for the poor.
The ANC has been unable to stem massive unemployment. Many in South Africa have inadequate housing, lack electricity and access to adequate education and health services.
In the fallout from the killings, the bitter mine strike has strengthened.
On September 3rd, Marikana mine owners Lonmin reported an average of 4-point-5 percent of workers showed up across various shifts. That's down from 13 percent on August 27th.
Lonmin has suffered a serious hit to its share price and has said it probably cannot meet debt payments, due later this month, because of the
