On show are bands playing all sorts of different musical genres, from heavy metal to punk.\u003cbr/\u003eAfter decades of Communist rule, today China's young follow and draw their inspiration from the musical genres currently sweeping Europe and the US. \u003cbr/\u003eWhile some of the local bands sing in English, others prefer to sing in Mandarin or in ethnic dialects. \u003cbr/\u003eHere teenagers with punk hairdos mingle with fans of folk music, while listening to a local band perform a song in English.\u003cbr/\u003eYet while some prefer to copy and imitate, a generation of aspiring rock musicians is writing and producing original songs.\u003cbr/\u003eInside the recording studio of Beijing-based Pilot Records, local band Spring and Autumn is preparing to record its new single.\u003cbr/\u003eSpring and Autumn are a well-known Beijing group that perform in Mandarin and write songs about traditional Chinese mythology.\u003cbr/\u003eThe band, a heavy metal group, is recording an acoustic song ahead of a new set of gigs across Beijing.\u003cbr/\u003eMusic journalist Kaiser Kuo says the Chinese capital has evolved as the only city in China with an active modern music scene.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Beijing has always been regarded as the cultural capital China, and anyone with an interest in culture, whether traditional or a foreign import, they would tend to gravitate towards Beijing.\" \u003cbr/\u003eHe adds that traditionally Beijing has always been regarded as the cultural capital of China.\u003cbr/\u003eToday Beijing has countless small independent record labels. Thanks to the Internet, these record companies are able to reach fans across the city and further a field.\u003cbr/\u003eOne record label at the front of this boom is Pilot Records. \u003cbr/\u003eThe two-year-old record company has eight bands on its books and a staff of six.\u003cbr/\u003eYu Zeng, a music producer and owner of Pilot Records, says record labels in China hardly ever make money from actually selling CDs or records, but earn mostly through gigs and events.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I think the Chinese music industry earns money mostly from live shows. Since I started writing, and producing songs, I've virtually earned no money from the royalties. I've just never earned money from selling records.\"\u003cbr/\u003eGone are the days when a musician could dream of releasing a top-selling record. \u003cbr/\u003eToday in China only a few musicians can earn a stable living.\u003cbr/\u003eKuo says Chinese rock musicians print CDs like name cards and hope their music is pirated by websites that offer illegal downloads.\u003cbr/\u003e\"There are actually only a handful of rock musicians in China who can actually make a living on recorded music. Most, they record CDs as one would print name cards, and the expectation is that you're not going to make any money from it and may help getting your name out there. And your fondest hope is that the very sophisticated pirate organisations, you know, the bit-torrent sites, are going to sink their claws into your recording and help you distribute it.\"\u003cbr/\u003eInside the small offices of Pilot Records the employees are hard at work trying to promote the next music festival or setting up upcoming sponsorship deals.\u003cbr/\u003eIn a country where many people prefer to purchase pirated records or illegally download music, record companies have had to adapt and change their business models.\u003cbr/\u003eYu says they have been affected by the rise in free downloads.\u003cbr/\u003eWith the most popular band selling around 5,000 CDs priced at RMB 50 (around USD$ 10) - record sales are barely enough to cover costs, says Pilot Records.\u003cbr/\u003eIn light of these weak revenues, Pilot Records has begun organising a series of shows where they hope to attract thousands of musical fans, and most importantly charge money.\u003cbr/\u003eIn addition, the record hopes to begin offering lucrative sponsorship deals to well-known Chinese brands.\u003cbr/\u003eEvents like this one being held in a Beijing park can attract several thousand fans, each paying between RMB 50-100  ($10-15 US dollars) for a ticket.\u003cbr/\u003eOne local fan, Jack Zhang, hopes to see more shows organised by record companies and recognises the problem posed by illegal downloads.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says, \"I think if there more music festivals like this, it might help China's music industry. I think the Chinese record companies are not run like in other countries, and I think music downloads are a big problem.\"\u003cbr/\u003eAccording the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry 9 (IFPI), 99% of all digital music distributed in China is pirated. \u003cbr/\u003eIllegal sales of music are China are valued by the IFPI at around US$ 400 million.\u003cbr/\u003eThe organisation represents the interests of the recording industry worldwide and has over 1,450 members in more than 75 countries.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to figures released by the China Internet Network Information Centre (CNNIC), 86.6% of China's 298 million Internet users regularly download music from the Internet.\u003cbr/\u003eAP Television \u003cbr/\u003eBeijing, China - September 15, 2009\u003cbr/\u003e1.
