Monday and granted plaintiffs an injunction of 4 days.\u003cbr/\u003eJudge Emmet G. Sullivan presided over the hearing on the lawsuit which had been filed  following a sweeping rewrite of immigration policy passed by the Republican-majority  Congress and signed last year by President Bill Clinton.\u003cbr/\u003eTwo Civil Rights Unions, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and the San  Francisco Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights filed the  lawsuit.\u003cbr/\u003eThey're seeking to delay implementing parts of the new immigration law, scheduled to  go into effect on April 1st. \u003cbr/\u003eThis rewrite is aimed at curbing the swelling ranks of illegal immigrants.\u003cbr/\u003eUnder new immigration rules which take effect on April 1st, it will be harder for  immigrants to get into the United States and easier for officials to deport them. \u003cbr/\u003e\"This is a proud day for democracy.
