Mid pan from reflection in mirror to Micenkova and model talking \u003cbr/\u003eBeauty, they say, is only skin deep but not according to therapists using a facial treatment made from placenta.\u003cbr/\u003eAlthough there's no clinical evidence the afterbirth of lambs will help improve your skin it doesn't stop people splashing out nearly $300 for the facial.\u003cbr/\u003eUntil now it's tended to be the secret preserve of celebrities, but now facials created from the afterbirth of lambs are becoming increasingly popular.\u003cbr/\u003eThe product used here is produced from ovine placenta transported to a laboratory in New Zealand.\u003cbr/\u003eThe extracted stem cells are added to a serum which is put directly onto the face.\u003cbr/\u003eHere at Harvey Nichols, a store in one of London's most exclusive and expensive areas, the treatment is part of a facial which takes over an hour to do.\u003cbr/\u003eTherapist Lenka Michenkova explains: \"We start with micro-dermabrasion, or a light peel and that's just going to exfoliate the surface of the skin and allows us to penetrate the placenta product deeper into the dermis of the skin and after we've done that we put the placenta concentrate on which is 90% of stem cell placenta and 10% of hyaluronic acid and that's going to help with healing, help with hydration, it's going to calm any inflammation on the skin any redness, or any damage that the client has.\"\u003cbr/\u003eWidespread trials to prove whether the introduction of stem cells can improve the skin have not been undertaken.\u003cbr/\u003eThe first hurdle is ensuring the product is able to penetrate our skin.\u003cbr/\u003eMichenkova says: \"Because the molecules of stem cells are so small they actually do penetrate deeper into the dermis and because we use the red light we do get to the lower layer of the skin, that's the only product that I know of and I have been in beauty for so long, that actually allows us to do that. So it's a combination of different things and because its so concentrated we're actually putting a lot of stem cells into that dermis, so it does go quite deep.\"\u003cbr/\u003eOnce the peel is removed Michenkova gets to work with the serum.\u003cbr/\u003eThis little 25 millilitre bottle of concentrate costs �225 ($346 USD) and holds enough for at least a handful of facials.\u003cbr/\u003eThe full placenta facial here will set you back �185 ($284 USD).\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to the manufacturer each bottle is composed of 90% stem cells and 10% hyaluric acid.\u003cbr/\u003eThe cost of the facial reflects the processing needed to turn the raw placenta into a usable beauty product.\u003cbr/\u003eThe amount of benefit derived from a facial like this is variable according to the quality of the stem cells extracted and how they are preserved.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to stem cell scientist Dr. Ricardo Gouveia from Reading University: \"If the stem cells are alive and are producing the right soluble molecules which can be secreted into the skin of the client, then you can induce skin cells to regenerate, or proliferate.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSo basically what you get out of the bottle is only as good as the quality of the stem cells which went in.\u003cbr/\u003eTo ensure clients get the most out of each session Michenkova uses a red light to boost circulation and stimulate the growth of collagen. \u003cbr/\u003eMichenkova says the popularity of the facial shows clients are impressed with the results.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to Michenkova, part of that is the quality of the product they source.\u003cbr/\u003eShe says: \"It's a sheep placenta, so it's derived from sheep post birth so there is no damage to the animal done whatsoever, they
