corruption trial in Italian sports history.  \u003cbr/\u003eThere was Filippo Carobbio, the former player for Italian team Siena, whose testimony before investigators pointed the finger at team coach Antonio Conte.  \u003cbr/\u003eConte, who led another team, Juventus, to a Serie A championship this year, is now under investigation for misconduct when he was coaching Siena.\u003cbr/\u003eAnother collaborator, former Ascoli player Vittorio Micolucci, appeared at the trial with his lawyer Daniela Pigotti. \u003cbr/\u003eShe explained that he was the first to collaborate and \"thanks to him, the lid came off the pot, and that's why we find ourselves today in this mega-trial.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe majority of the 61 defendants appearing at the corruption trial opening were football players, although 22 football clubs were also on trial.  \u003cbr/\u003eAmong the clubs on trial were three teams that had moved up from Italy's Serie B to Serie A football league last year: Atalanta, Siena and Novara. \u003cbr/\u003eSports analysts explained that this is the most \"crowded\" trial, in terms of the number of defendants, in the history of Italian football.\u003cbr/\u003eSports journalist Marcel Vulpis emphasised the seriousness of the \"criminal conspiracy to cheat and carry out sports fraud.\" \u003cbr/\u003e\"There are cases, we presume, of some players taking money to fix the result of certain games, therefore, they would have modified the final result of the game.\"\u003cbr/\u003eVulpis, who has written a soon-to-be-released book on corruption in Italian football titled \"Free Trade Zone: Mafia and Football\", said this goes way beyond Italy, and the match-fixing conspiracy is in fact being run by Asian mafia groups. \u003cbr/\u003e\"We presume that it is the Chinese mafia that is behind this, that they are the big brother behind this operation which then finds local organised crime groups in various countries through which they can reach the players who decided to be unethical.\"\u003cbr/\u003eProsecutors claim there was an extensive match-fixing ring stretching as far as Singapore and South America that was allegedly in operation for more than 10 years. \u003cbr/\u003eThe investigation was started by judicial authorities in Cremona last year. \u003cbr/\u003eIt has resulted in a three and a-half-year ban for former Atalanta captain Cristiano Doni, and the arrest of former Lazio captain Giuseppe Signori.  \u003cbr/\u003eItaly has only recently recovered from the 2006 match-fixing scandal, known as Calciopoli, that resulted in Juventus being relegated to Serie B for a season. \u003cbr/\u003ePenalties were also handed down for several other Serie A teams, and long bans were delivered to club and refereeing officials. \u003cbr/\u003eThursday's trial is beginning in the same week that police conducted widespread searches into players and teams in Serie A.\u003cbr/\u003eDawn raids on Monday resulted in 14 arrests, including that of Lazio captain Stefano Mauri. \u003cbr/\u003ePolice also swept through the Italian national squad's training camp near Florence on Monday. \u003cbr/\u003eItaly national defender Domenico Criscito was left off the Euro 2012 squad after he was placed under investigation. \u003cbr/\u003eAs well as the arrests on Monday, three people were placed under house arrest and two others
