Some members have now married...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eThe parable of the good Samaritan in the Bible has inspired the idea of helping strangers around the world. \u003cbr/\u003eBut the Samaritan sect that inspired the parable are now under threat after years of intermarriage. \u003cbr/\u003eSome members have now married eastern European brides to strengthen their bloodlines. \u003cbr/\u003eTwo years ago, 26-year-old Alla Evdokimova was living in the Ukraine, and working as a bartender. \u003cbr/\u003eNow living in Israel, and married to a Samaritan, her life has undergone a dramatic change after she was introduced to her husband through a matchmaking service. \u003cbr/\u003eHer husband is part of a rapidly dwindling sect known as the Samaritans. \u003cbr/\u003eAfter failed attempts to find a wife in the Samaritan community, Azam al-Dif went to the Ukraine with the help of an Israeli matchmaking service. \u003cbr/\u003eHe met 17 women in 20 days, and asked Alla to be his bride. \u003cbr/\u003e\"I have a friend from Tel Aviv who has an office, and my husband went to this office and said he wanted to get married. She brought him to the Ukraine. This friend called me and told me that there is a man who would like to get married and he is looking for a good girl and he himself is a very good man. So I said sure, let's see. I went and saw him, I spoke with him and I liked him. \"\u003cbr/\u003eSo she accepted his proposal, and the one-way ticket to Israel. \u003cbr/\u003e\"I went to the Ukraine with a translator. Everyday they started to introduce me to new girls, until I chose one of the girls.  She agreed to marry me, so I told her let's prepare and chose a date to get married. We got married there,\" explains Azam.\u003cbr/\u003eSeveral days later, the couple married in a civil ceremony in Ukraine. Then, they returned to the West Bank for a formal religious ceremony several months later recognised by the community. \u003cbr/\u003eShe and her 53-year-old husband Azam, now have a 2-year-old son, Murad. \u003cbr/\u003eAlla learned about the Samaritan traditions, and she says she is happy with her new way of life. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Samaritans have opened their bloodlines to a group of eastern European brides in a desperate quest to preserve their ancient culture. \u003cbr/\u003eFive young women from Russia and Ukraine have moved to this hilltop village in recent years to marry local men. \u003cbr/\u003eThe women have not only breathed new life into the village. The fresh blood is also helping a community that has been plagued by genetic diseases caused by generations of intermarriage. \u003cbr/\u003eThe marriages, along with advanced genetic testing in Israeli hospitals, have helped reduce what used to be a 15 percent rate of birth defects. Since 1996, only four disabled Samaritan children have been born. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Samaritans have lived in the Holy Land for thousands of years, and are probably best known for the parable of the Good Samaritan in the New Testament Book of Luke. \u003cbr/\u003eNamed for Samaria, a region in the northern West Bank, the Samaritans believe themselves to be the remnants of Israelites exiled by the Assyrians in 722 B.C. They practice a religion closely linked to Judaism and venerate a version of the Old Testament, but are not Jews. \u003cbr/\u003eIn the fourth and fifth centuries, the Samaritan population is thought to have topped 1.5 million, but religious persecution and economic hardship had nearly erased it by the early 20th century. Today, there are roughly 700 Samaritans. \u003cbr/\u003eThe community has good relations with both Israelis and Palestinians. But their numbers have been further reduced by the decision by 10 women in recent years to marry outside the community.\u003cbr/\u003eWith a limited pool of potential partners, it is common for Samaritans to marry within their extended families, even first cousins. As a result, Samaritan babies have suffered from birth defects and genetic diseases at a much higher rate than the general population. \u003cbr/\u003eRecently, the residents began to look elsewhere, and to use modern techniques to meet their brides. \u003cbr/\u003eThe women must make a huge commitment - they are bound by special dietary rules, such as eating meat slaughtered only by a Samaritan priest, and strict rules during their menstrual periods. For seven days, women cannot touch anything in the house, and if a mother comes into contact with her children, she must wash them before their father can touch them. After childbirth, a woman cannot have contact with her husband for 40 days if a boy is born, 80 days for a daughter. On Saturdays, the day of rest, women stay at home while men pray in their synagogues. \u003cbr/\u003eSome Samaritans choose to continue to marry within their community despite the health risks. \u003cbr/\u003e30-year-old, Rajai Altif married his first cousin and they have a healthy 6-year-old son. \u003cbr/\u003eBut he said he understood the need to bring in the outsiders. \u003cbr/\u003e\"Everyone has the right to choose what the way they feel right to build a family and a future. And as long as there few Samaritan girls it is good to go and find some girls, for example from the Ukraine, as has been the case before. And it has been much more successful than expected. Especially in keeping our religious traditions and our customs and the way we raise our children and having a new generation with new genes.\"\u003cbr/\u003eHusni Cohen, a 69-year-old village elder, said the arranged marriages are not ideal, since there is always a risk that the newcomers may decide to leave. But in a community whose population has fallen to roughly 360 people, he said there is little choice. \u003cbr/\u003e\"The Samaritan girl grows up with Samaritan traditions and customs, but when you bring a foreigner if she is either Muslim of Christian or Jewish she will be grow up with her own religious traditions. Then it is hard for one person to change her ways. There is a need for her to become a Samaritan but I think that there is a danger for the future (of the Samaritans).\"\u003cbr/\u003eMaking the transition to join the Samaritans is challenging for some outsiders. In order to join the community, the high priest must approve the marriage. The women must spend several months learning the ancient Torah, the Samaritan holy book which is different from the Jewish Torah scroll, and other traditions before the ceremony. \u003cbr/\u003eIn all, five women have arrived over the past decade, finding comfort with one another as their numbers have grown. \u003cbr/\u003eThe hope for the Samaritans is that the community of people living in Israel will outlive the Biblical parable they inspired. \u003cbr/\u003eNablus, West Bank - 21, February, 2013\u003cbr/\u003e1.
