Zoom out kids playing soccer
Bosnians around the world are pausing to remember the Srebrenica massacre in 1995.
July 11 is the 17th anniversary of the murder of 8,000 men and boys, defined by the International Court of Justice as genocide.
The anniversary is no where more keenly felt than among a community of Bosnians now living in the US.
Hundreds of Bosnians gathered in South Saint Louis, Missouri, on Sunday for a religious ceremony to remember the victims of the 1995 massacre of thousands of men and boys in Srebrenica.
The immigrants sang, prayed and listened to sermons from religious leaders. Seventeen years have passed since Serbian forces killed their relatives, friends and neighbours, but the pain is still fresh.
Spiritual leaders spoke before a sign in Bosnian "Never Forget Srebrenica." The sign showed coffins holding the remains of hundreds of victims.
Many of those at the ceremony were young children when their families fled the Bosnian war.
Sixteen-year-old Sumejja Sabic says it is important for the younger generation to remember the past.
"I am here to remember the victims. Some of them are my Dad's family. And my Dad actually fought in the war and was very lucky to survive. So I am very grateful for that," she says.
Many of the estimated 70,000 Bosnians living in Saint Louis were touched by the war.
Many have watched with interest the trial of former Bosnian Serb military chief, Ratko Mladic in The Hague.
Mladic's trial started on 16 May, but was almost immediately halted because prosecutors admitted that an apparent clerical error meant they failed to disclose thousands of pages of evidence to the defence. It began again on Monday.
Just last month, former Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic was acquitted on of one of the two genocide charges he faces - but the Yugoslav war crimes tribunal upheld 10 other counts at the halfway stage of his long-running trial.
The newly discovered remains of 520 victims of the Srebrenica massacre will be buried on Wednesday, on the 17th anniversary of the killing of 8-thousand men and boys by Serb forces in 1995 in Srebrenica, the worst massacre of civilians on European soil after World War II.
Workers prepared the graves for the mass burial and commemoration ceremony in Potocari, near Srebrenica.
The remains have been identified after months and sometimes years of DNA tests.
The bodies were excavated years ago but has always been challenging task identifying them as the perpetrators secretly dug up the original mass graves with bulldozers, then drove decomposing remains to other locations and buried them there.
Many of the Bosnian community in Saint Louis were scarred by the war.
Some, like college student Kenan Sahbaz, barely escaped. He says his family fled their hometown of Jelec, the night before it was burned down. He came to the U.S. in 1995 as a five-year-old.
Sahbaz says an uncle was killed in a concentration camp. Like many Bosnians, he is keeping close watch on the war crimes trials of former Bosnian Serb Leader Radovan Karadzic, former Serbian General Ratko Mladic and others.
"Karadzic and Mladic, when you look at their faces, and you look at them on the trials and stuff, it's like they don't care. I mean, even if you look at Milosevic, his trial was taking forever. And in the end, he ended up dying in jail and they never finished his trial."
The death and subsequent inconclusive trial of former President of Yugoslavia and then Serbia, Slobodan Milosevic leaves many Bosnians doubtful of any measure of justice coming from the Hague.
Nurija Omerovic was in Srebrenica when it was overrun by Serb forces. He walked 100 miles through the forest to safety in Tuzla. He has never found his baby daughter. And, he says Serbs killed all of his wife's male family members.
"It's my family. It's my story. I survived that and some members of my family didn't survive. And, I am here to build up new life, but I'm never going to forget what happened to my members of family."
The Bosnian community in St. Louis often turns to Bosnian-language media for updates on current events in their homeland. A weekly radio show in their language offers music and community news, as well as live reports from Bosnia.
"We have a professional guy. He works for our radio show and he collects over the week all the important stuff of what is going on in our country. It offers traditional fare that patrons say is just as good as back home.
Given the history of the war between Serbs and Bosnians, it might seem surprising to find Chicago resident, Nick Borojevic at the restaurant. His parents are Serbian, yet for years he has been eating at Bosnia Gold every time he is in St. Louis.
He says it reminds him of the food back in the Balkans.
"Well, that's back in the old country. Over the past decade, he's seen the neighbourhood blossom with Bosnian businesses.
"Especially this street, the location that my restaurant is. We have a lot of bakeries, we have a lot of bars, we have coffee shops, we have meat shops. Grocery stores. A Bosnian language newspaper is next to a Bosnian market. The market offers Bosnian language magazines and newspapers as well as a variety of food from Bosnia and Croatia.
If there is one passion that all Bosnians seem to share, it is soccer. Each summer, the community hosts a soccer tournament to raise money and remember the massacre. Teams pay $200 US dollars to compete. The money is going for scholarships for kids who lost parents in the war.
Bosnians from around the country come to compete.
"I'm coming from Akron to support my
