We want Germany to remain on the centre course,\" the most prominent FDP official, the current German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle said to supporters gathered to see him in west German town of Euskirchen.\u003cbr/\u003eAs rival left parties have repeatedly shunned the possibility of teaming up to take power, Westerwelle's warning is likely to be of fairly limited mobilising effect for the liberal voters despairing over the condition of the party.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Bad leadership, lack of unity within the party, the Euro crisis as attack on their economic liberal values, and the fact they didn't manage to enforce their position against the (Christian Democratic) Union (CDU) in the last four years have all contributed to the fact they are now severely punished\", said a Berlin based political scientist Aiko Wagner listing liberal misfortunes in recent years.\u003cbr/\u003eThe FDP's top election candidate Reiner Bruederle, speaking at a recent election rally, reminded voters that Germany was in \"a good situation.\"\u003cbr/\u003e\"The world envies us,\" he said. \u003cbr/\u003eThe FDP's problem is that a very similar quote comes daily from Merkel's election campaign, and unlike the FDP, she actually is credited by the voters for the situation being good.\u003cbr/\u003eIn the case that the election results for the CDU and FDP fall short of the majority needed to continue the current coalition, Merkel has two more coalition options to explore.\u003cbr/\u003eThe first is a return to so-called grand coalition with the Social Democratic Party (SDP), a combination which ruled the country from 2005 to 2009.\u003cbr/\u003eAnother, although very unlikely one, is alliance with the Greens.\u003cbr/\u003eInitially a protest party formed in the wake of the 1968 movement, the Greens took part in a leftist Social Democrat government led by Gerhard Schroeder, and have started the current campaign aiming for the same political combination.\u003cbr/\u003eThe party, who advocate a speedy exit from nuclear energy production, got a boost as the Fukushima disaster in Japan scared the public. Support from the Prime Minister of traditionally conservative Baden-Wuertenberg and the Mayor of Stuttgart came soon after. \u003cbr/\u003eBut, as the election day nears and the Social Democrats (SDP) fail to catch up with Merkel's CDU, even the Greens's polls recently went back to single digits at some of the pollsters surveys.\u003cbr/\u003e\"One can not say what the reason is, but we for our part can make it clear what are the alternatives,\" said one of the leader of The Greens, Katrin Goering-Eckard, on the campaign trail in Berlin.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Either there will be an energy shift forward, with a hundred percent renewable energy, or a roll backward with coal energy production like in the nineties. We will make that clear, that is the task in the next few days,\" she said. \u003cbr/\u003eAway from any coalition speculation but well in the spotlight of public attention is an anti-Euro startup Alternative for Germany (AfD).\u003cbr/\u003eFormed earlier this year by a group of professors and journalists unhappy with Merkel's Euro rescue measures, the AfD was tipped by the media to become a voice for protest vote, to gain importance and fill the space on the right of conservative Merkel's CDU.\u003cbr/\u003eBut, four days ahead of the elections, most polls show AfD floating around three percent and therefore failing to enter the parliament, although the five percent threshold value is still within the margin of error of most polls.\u003cbr/\u003eIn addition, in a country traditionally sceptical of the right for historical reasons, supporters of the AfD might simply be reluctant to admit their affiliation to the pollsters, and the AfD might still come out as a surprise on Sunday.\u003cbr/\u003eSo far, AfD hasn't got much of a political program, says analyst Aiko Wagner, but their stance on Euro is pretty clear.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I would change the European treaties so that every state gets a right to exit Euro. It is completely unacceptable that this is not the case at the moment. And - I would immediately ban the take over of foreign debts, so that this rescue policy ceases to exist,\" said the party leader Bern Lucke at an event in Berlin earlier this week.\u003cbr/\u003eCommenting on media speculation of AfD drawing support from far right, Aiko Wagner said he \"would not describe them as far right.
