Wider shots of protestors\u003cbr/\u003eDelegates to the annual meetings of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank arrived in Washington DC on Friday for two days of talks about the global financial situation.\u003cbr/\u003eThe IMF in its World Economic Outlook, released on Wednesday, predicted the global economy would grow 5 percent in 2004.\u003cbr/\u003eIf the projection proves accurate, it would mark the strongest growth since 1973.\u003cbr/\u003eSecurity was tight in the US capital.  Two dozen city blocks around the World Bank and IMF meeting were closed, and traffic was diverted.\u003cbr/\u003eA handful of demonstrators chanting \"Debt Relief Now\" gathered outside the security barricades.\u003cbr/\u003eProtests were expected to be smaller than in years past, and the police presence will be much larger.\u003cbr/\u003eProtest organisers say the security effort is an \"overreaction.\"  But Police Chief Charles Ramsey said the tight security cordon wasn't being erected for the protests. \u003cbr/\u003eInstead, he said it was put up to maintain security around two sites deemed possible terrorist targets.\u003cbr/\u003eThe weekend meetings were expected to focus on Iraqi reconstruction and debt relief to the world's poorest countries.\u003cbr/\u003eChina was to be another key area of discussion.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Bush administration on Friday won an important commitment from China that it would move \"firmly and steadily\" to a flexible, market-based currency. \u003cbr/\u003eBut China offered no firm timetable for how long the transition would take.\u003cbr/\u003eThe transformation of China's currency system has been a top demand of the American manufacturing sector. \u003cbr/\u003eUS companies believe China's policy of linking its currency at a fixed rate to the US dollar has undervalued the Chinese yuan by as much as 40 percent, giving the country a tremendous competitive advantage over US products.\u003cbr/\u003eChina's commitment came in advance of its first-ever meeting with the Group of Seven major industrial countries, which was to occur over dinner on Friday night. \u003cbr/\u003eThe G-7 has also called for China to adopt a more flexible currency system.\u003cbr/\u003ePrior to the G-7 dinner, US Treasury Secretary John Snow hosted a meeting of G8, Middle East \u0026amp; North African countries.\u003cbr/\u003eThe issue of Iraq was expected to be at the forefront of that agenda.\u003cbr/\u003eOn Wednesday, the International Monetary Fund approved an emergency loan of 436 (m) million  US dollars for Iraq - the first assistance it has provided to help the country rebuild its wartorn
