Various of Shizuka massaging clients face after treatment
Rubbing excrement into your face may be considered extreme, but it's an ancient Japanese beauty regime which is attracting New Yorkers desperate to get a fresh faced complexion and dewy skin tone.
Therapists call the treatment made from bird droppings, a geisha facial.
It goes on face with the consistency of a thin porridge and it doesn't smell unpleasant, but it takes a certain determination to have bird faeces brushed onto your face.
The treatment is being championed by the beauty salon Shizuka New York.
A growing number of men and women coming to the salon for the traditional Japanese treatment using nightingale droppings mixed with ground rice bran.
It's not a complex concoction, but costing $180 for each session, it's not a cheap one either.
Shizuka Bernstein owns the spa that applies the poop potion in zen-like rooms graced with orchids.
According to Berstein: "The main ingredient, the bird droppings, have natural enzyme, and this enzyme can remove dead skin cells. The outer layer of the skin, so that is why we can cleanse the skin very well, and exfoliate the skin very well."
The treatment was started centuries ago among actors in Kabuki theatres and was also used by geishas.
Bernstein, a Tokyo native, learned about the treatment from her mother and has been offering what she calls the "Geisha Facial" for about five years.
While it's the only spa in New York to offer the treatment, the poop nightingale poo is no secret in Japan, where it started centuries ago.
Mari Miyoshi, a the 35-year-old occupational therapist, was asked by a friend of hers who works at Shizuka New York if she wouldn't mind being a model to help the spa show off its most popular facial.
When told it involved getting bird droppings rubbed into her face, Miyoshi didn't hesitate.
She says: "It didn't smell like what I imagine bird poop to smell like. It actually makes you feel nostalgic cause it makes you think of rice crispies or toasted coconut."
She is always keen to try new things.
The treatment begins with steam to open the pores and soften the skin and cream is applied.
Then comes what Bernstein calls "the nightingale part."
The excrement has been processed into a dried and finely ground powder.
Bernstein pours into a bowl, mixing it with rice bran.
She says: "Well, when first when I says , I introduced to my regular clients and then they thought I was kidding. Not kidding, like because of my English they thought I was not saying correct word. So I says no, no I'm saying droppings."
After being given about five minutes to penetrate the skin the mixture of faeces and bran is removed with foaming cleanser and Miyoshi's face is covered with a wet cloth bathed in lavender and geranium essences.
A common misconception is that any old bird droppings can be used.
Bernstein says she was shocked when a man even called her one day offering to sell her authentic New York pigeon excrement.
Only droppings from birds of the nightingale species are allowed according to Bernstein, because these birds live on seeds which produce the enzyme which is the active ingredient.
Dermatologist Dr. Michele Green runs her own practice in New York.
Green argues that bird droppings, like almost anything, can be used to exfoliate the skin, but she doubts it has any special powers.
She says: "I don't think it is any different using an apricot scrub or a mask that you could buy in Duane Reade or CVS or any local pharmacy because it doesn't have any stronger powers than that. So I think you have to look at it the same way as putting on a clay mask that you can buy over the counter. chain stores.
Back at the salon Bernstein is convinced the popularity of the treatment is evidence that clients believe it works.
In fact Bernstein believes the Geisha
