Ritual outside church\u003cbr/\u003eThousands of police were deployed in Jerusalem's Old City on Saturday as visitors from around the world came to mark the Orthodox Easter \"holy fire\" ritual at Christianity's holiest site.\u003cbr/\u003eA police spokesman said tens of thousands of worshippers descended upon the Old City for the ceremony, in which a flame believed to be miraculously ignited illuminated thousands of torches and candles.\u003cbr/\u003eDuring the ceremony, Orthodox religious leaders descended into the church's underground tomb to bring out the flame which was greeted in the church by applause and cheering.\u003cbr/\u003eMembers of the congregation then attempted to light their candles from the \"holy fire,\" filling the church with light and smoke within seconds.\u003cbr/\u003eSome people dripped hot wax on to their faces.\u003cbr/\u003eBefore the service in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, where tradition says Jesus was crucified and buried, a Catholic Mass was held. \u003cbr/\u003eThis year, the calendars of five major Christian faiths coincide with one another, meaning Roman Catholic and Orthodox Christians are both celebrating Easter on Sunday. This happens only once every four years.\u003cbr/\u003eAfter unrest last year during the \"holy fire\" ritual, security was tight on Saturday. \u003cbr/\u003eSeveral thousand police officers were deployed, alleys around the church were blocked off, and police also barred cars from entering the Old City.\u003cbr/\u003eDuring last year's holy fire ritual, tempers flared as thousands of people waited to pass through security barricades into the Old City. \u003cbr/\u003eSome priests and pilgrims shoved and punched police, and there were scuffles inside the church.\u003cbr/\u003eThe ritual dates back at least 1,200 years. The precise details of the flame's source are a closely guarded secret, but some believe it appears spontaneously from Christ's burial area as a message from Jesus on the eve of the Orthodox Easter that he has not forgotten his followers.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd in Manger Square in Bethlehem, Greek Orthodox followers celebrated the day before Easter, which is the most important religious day on the
