Well I've come to Mattel Children's Hospital at UCLA today, and I've never been here before and it's a really impressive place. I've come here to visit with asthma patients, as I did upstairs just earlier, their parents and their doctors, to voice my support for a resounding 'Yes' on Prop. 87. I wish I could wear this on my head. That's how much I believe in what we're trying to accomplish here. We are all victims of this state's poor air quality. California has the worst air pollution in the nation, and what many don't realize is how harmful breathing this air can be -- particularly when it comes to our children. Our school buses are diesel-powered. Petroleum diesel exhaust is a toxic carcinogen. We know that diesel exhaust is linked to cancer, premature death and health problems like asthma. Even more startling is that emissions levels inside school buses are five- to- 15-times greater than they are outside. Since we can do something about this, it it unimaginable to me that we wouldn't. I was stunned to learn, when President Clinton said in a speech at UCLA the other day that, 'At the age of two months, babies in Los Angeles have already breathed enough toxins to reach the EPA's lifetime limit for cancer risk from dirty air.' California has always seemed to be the free-thinking forward-moving pioneer of this country Now, when it counts the most, really, to our children, to all of our health and welfare, to our future, let's lead the way. Julia Roberts in hospital ward\u003cbr/\u003eActress Julia Roberts spoke out at a news conference Monday morning (16 October) in Los Angeles, endorsing Proposition 87, a California oil-production tax. \u003cbr/\u003eThe \"Erin Brockovich\" Oscar winner, a mother of twins, appeared at the Mattel Children's Hospital at UCLA, where she also met with patients and doctors. Roberts says that the children are ill because of air pollution.\u003cbr/\u003e\"California has always been a free-thinking forward-moving pioneer of this country,\" she said. \"Now, when it counts the most, really, to our children to all of our health and welfare to out future, let's lead the way. Let's vote yes on prop 87.\"\u003cbr/\u003eProposition 87 would tax companies drilling for oil in California until the state has generated $4 billion. The proposition's proponents say the money would be set aside for loans, grants and subsidies to promote alternative fuels and more energy-efficient vehicles. \u003cbr/\u003eProposition 87 has also been given the backing for former U.S. president Bill Clinton, as well as the backing of Clinton's vice president, Al Gore, who appears in a television commercial on its behalf. Actors Jamie Lee Curtis and James Caan have also backed the measure.\u003cbr/\u003eOil producers have so far donated fifty-four million dollars to oppose Prop 87 with arguments of higher prices.
