Wide of exterior of Burma Superstar Restaurant \u003cbr/\u003eA senior United Nations official in Bangkok described the situation in Myanmar as a  \"major, major emergency,\" as the international aid effort to reach the hundreds of thousands of people affected by Cyclone Nargis was getting underway.\u003cbr/\u003eCyclone Nargis, which hit Myanmar over the weekend, is believed to have killed at least 22-thousand people and left as many as one (m) million homeless.\u003cbr/\u003eRichard Horsey, spokesman for the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, told Associated Press Television that they faced huge logistical challenges because many areas are underwater.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Basically the entire lower delta region is under water,\" Horsey said. \"And this shows really very graphically the huge logistical challenges facing these teams as they struggle to get these emergency relief supplies out to the populations that need them,\" he added.\u003cbr/\u003eHorsey said his teams in Myanmar reported finding bodies floating around in the areas they are servicing and said it would be difficult to estimate the number of dead as so much of the devastated area is yet to be explored.\u003cbr/\u003eUN teams are delivering water purification tablets, plastic sheeting and medicine in their first wave of relief efforts.\u003cbr/\u003eTheir biggest fear is the spread of water borne diseases from the bodies piling up and from mosquitoes.\u003cbr/\u003eThe United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) told AP Television that there would be a great need for rehabilitation after the initial relief efforts were complete.\u003cbr/\u003e\"If you look at what happened people are saying tsunami. We just don't know that,\" said Bridle.\u003cbr/\u003eVarious governments have pledged their assistance to Myanmar in the form of relief supplies and emergency donations to reach the affected areas.\u003cbr/\u003eAustralia said it would split three (m) million (Australian) dollars (2.8 (m) million US dollars) between Australian non-government organisations who already have access to people in Myanmar, the United Nations' World Food Programme (WFP) and UNICEF.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We've structured our humanitarian assistance in this way to ensure that very quickly we can assist in remedial efforts on the ground,\" Australian Foreign Minister Stephen Smith told AP Television in Seoul, South Korea on Wednesday.\u003cbr/\u003eAid had begun to trickle into the country late on Tuesday but the worst-hit Irrawaddy delta, where nearly 22,000 people had perished, was largely cut off from the rest of the world for four days after winds, floods and high tidal waves tore through the densely populated region.\u003cbr/\u003eIndia has sent two military aircraft with eight tonnes (metric) of aid to Myanmar, also known as Burma, on Wednesday.\u003cbr/\u003eThe first of two AN-32 aircraft departed from New Delhi on Tuesday, each carrying around four tonnes of medicines and tents.\u003cbr/\u003eTwo Indian naval ships carrying emergency food and medical aid were also en route to the afflicted city of Yangon and were expected to reach there later on Wednesday.\u003cbr/\u003eMeanwhile, Myanmar immigrants living in the US have been desperately trying to reach their families back home.\u003cbr/\u003eKo Ko Lay, who lives in San Francisco, is one of thousands of people from Myanmar who have made their home in California's Bay area with the help of refugee resettlement agencies.\u003cbr/\u003eLay told AP Television he has not been able to reach his family.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I called my Mum and my sister and I couldn't reach them because of the phone line and email is cut out so it is also really frustrating for me,\" he said.\u003cbr/\u003eJames Thu, another immigrant, works at the Burma Superstar restaurant in San Francisco.
