squirrel. \u003cbr/\u003eThe island offers protection from the red squirrel's biggest threat, the North American grey squirrel, which carries a deadly virus and out competes the red squirrels for habitat. \u003cbr/\u003eIn autumn, the red squirrels are particularly active and visitors to the island are provided with some delightful sightings of these rare creatures.   \u003cbr/\u003eBrownsea Island off the Dorset coast in the United Kingdom is one of the last safe heavens of the British red squirrel.\u003cbr/\u003eThe island is a nature reserve and a sanctuary for a creature which features strongly in English folklore and literature but is rarely seen in the wild, despite being native to Britain.\u003cbr/\u003eDespite the animal's popularity, many have never laid eyes on the small animal.\u003cbr/\u003eSarah Harper, one of the many visitors to the island, says many people aren't aware that red squirrels actually exist in reality outside the realm of fairy tales and picture postcards. \u003cbr/\u003eEven if numbers are dwindling, curious visitors still make the journey to see the animal.\u003cbr/\u003eChris Thain is the local nature reserve manager.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says the squirrels have a special place in the imagination of the public and many are thrilled to see them in the wild.\u003cbr/\u003eAutumn is the best time of the year to see the squirrels as they are out and about collecting food for the winter, their impressive red coats blending in beautifully with the autumn foliage.\u003cbr/\u003eChris Thain believes the squirrels, having featured in childrens' stories and road safety campaign on the 1960's, are associated with many British people's youth. \u003cbr/\u003eBrownsea Island is the perfect place for this population of around 200 squirrels. \u003cbr/\u003eThey have almost no predators and they are well enough away from the North American grey squirrel which has successfully populated mainland Britain, since it was introduced in the late 19th century. \u003cbr/\u003eThe grey squirrel carries a pox virus which is lethal to the red squirrels.\u003cbr/\u003eAbigail Gibbs, the Nature Reserve warden says that any grey squirrels on the island might threaten the red squirrel population.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe United Kingdom's National Trust says there only 160,000 red squirrels, compared to 2.5 million greys.\u003cbr/\u003eBrownsea Island also offers a diverse habit where rare birds, insects and bees thrive.\u003cbr/\u003eKeyword animals
