This confident 12-year-old is the height of a much younger toddler, and yet her appearance is that of an elderly woman.\u003cbr/\u003eChildren suffering from the rare ageing disease Progeria have a tragically short life expectancy.\u003cbr/\u003eMost will survive only until their teens or at most until their early twenties.\u003cbr/\u003e12-year-old Ontlametse Phalatse is the only known black female known to suffer from the ageing disease.\u003cbr/\u003eDespite the already visible effects of her condition, she has a sunny and happy disposition and asks with confidence if anyone has seen another person like her.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Have you even have seen a person like me? Doctors estimate that one in eight (m) million live births are affected by the disease.  \u003cbr/\u003eDr Engela Honey, Ontlametste''s specialist paediatrician, says there are four other known cases of Progeria in South Africa. \u003cbr/\u003eDr Honey explains the abnormality that causes the disease.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Progeria is a genetic condition. \u003cbr/\u003eDr Honey says though she is happy about the state of Ontlametste''s health at present, she worries that health facilities in South Africa will not be adequate if she falls ill.\u003cbr/\u003eChildren with Progeria begin to display characteristics of accelerated aging at around 18-24 months of age. \u003cbr/\u003eSymptoms include growth failure, loss of body fat and hair, aged-looking skin, stiffness of joints and hip dislocation, according to the Progeria Research Foundation website.\u003cbr/\u003eThe children have a similar appearances, despite coming from different ethnic backgrounds, according to the Progeria Research Foundation.\u003cbr/\u003eChildren suffering from Progeria can die from heart failure and strokes, among the other diseases which affect elderly people. \u003cbr/\u003eLife expectancy for children who suffer from Progeria is short.\u003cbr/\u003eSufferers usually normally live into their teenage years or sometimes into their early twenties.\u003cbr/\u003eFor Ontlametste, living in the present is everything, taking advantage of school and keeping optimistic, for as long as she is
