Ritchie.\u003cbr/\u003eFather Ritchie was born in New York and has been coming to St. Patrick's since he was a boy. \u003cbr/\u003eHe's been a priest in New York for over 30 years and in 2006 he became the cathedral's rector in charge of its day-to-day operations.\u003cbr/\u003eOver 5 million visitors a year come to St Patrick's, some to pray, others just to admire the Cathedral's gothic architecture.\u003cbr/\u003eOn the surface, St. Patrick's has much to admire, but some of the Cathedral's beauty lies beneath its floor, away from the eyes of visitors.\u003cbr/\u003eBelow the High Alter lies the crypt of St. Patrick's, a marble covered room where all the Archbishops of New York find their final resting place. \u003cbr/\u003eAs visitors wander through St. Patrick's cavernous nave, many admire what looks to be a beautiful stone ceiling, but looks can be deceiving. \u003cbr/\u003eOver decades of construction the cathedral ran up a variety of financial troubles. One of the ways they saved money was to scrap the original plans for a vaulted-stone ceiling and instead to build the ceiling of wood and plaster that would give the appearance of stone but for much less money. \u003cbr/\u003eIt's a surprise most people don't know that. And above this ceiling there is a roof, which is a typical V shaped roof on top of the cathedral,\" says Father Ritchie. \u003cbr/\u003eLike many old buildings, almost everything in St. Patrick's is in constant need of repair.\u003cbr/\u003eThe last major restoration project took place in the 1970s, and early next year the Archdiocese of New York plans to start another major renovation.\u003cbr/\u003eYears of wear and tear have weathered St. Patrick's windows, its stone work, and even its organ. \u003cbr/\u003eSt. Patrick's organ contains over nine-thousand pipes, and there are plans underway to disassemble the organ and clean each pipe individually.\u003cbr/\u003eSeemingly every nook and cranny of St Patrick's interior needs to be cleaned. \u003cbr/\u003eWhat on the surface can look like mere dirt can over time cause corrosion. \u003cbr/\u003eAt the back of St. Patrick's is the quiet and often uncrowded Lady Chapel.\u003cbr/\u003eFlanked by candles, the chapel seems worlds away from the enormity of the main nave.\u003cbr/\u003eA white marble statue of Mary stands at the front of the chapel, but the true beauty of the chapel is its stained-glass windows. \u003cbr/\u003eTen windows, designed by Englishman, Paul Vincent Woodroffe, surround the Chapel's visitors, shining a blue light upon them. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Lady Chapel's stained glass-windows along with the other stained glass at St. Patrick's presents a difficult problem for the upcoming restoration project.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The stained glass windows are an item that will be difficult to deal with, there aren't too many people that are expert in dealing with stained glass, especially for glass that is this old,\" says Father Ritchie.\u003cbr/\u003eWhile St. Patrick's stained glass presents a restoration problem on the Cathedral's inside, it is New York City's acidic rain and pollution that present problems on the outside for the century-old-stone faÄÅ¼Ëade.\u003cbr/\u003eThe acidic rain and pollution eat away at the stone over time.\u003cbr/\u003eThe restoration process aims to clean St. Patrick's faÄÅ¼Ëade in hopes of preserving it for centuries to come. \u003cbr/\u003eSmall problems have been patched and fixed over the last 30 years, but Father Ritchie says the time has come for a full scale restoration.\u003cbr/\u003eFather Ritchie would not estimate the cost of the restorations and despite the suggestion of some, he says St. Patrick's will remain open during the project. \u003cbr/\u003e\"Some people would be happy to say 'alright close the whole building until everything's done and then we'll open it up again', but that's not even an option for us.
