It's a matter of our own health,\" she said.\u003cbr/\u003eA group of policemen monitored the protest and filmed them, but did not intervene. \u003cbr/\u003eAbout two hours later, they persuaded the protesters to return to their homes, saying their actions were against the law.\u003cbr/\u003eIn the 1990s, the 2.4 square kilometre (1 square mile) Chaoyang District Waste Disposal Centre used to be remote from downtown residential areas.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Chinese government then invested 480 million renminbi (70 million US dollars) in expanding the centre, absorbing what used to be Gao'antun village, and displacing its residents.\u003cbr/\u003eNow millions of people live nearby.\u003cbr/\u003eBerlin's Date, one of the biggest apartment communities, is located only 2.5 kilometres (1.5 miles) away from the waste disposal centre. \u003cbr/\u003eThousands of residents living near the plant say they are affected by rank and poisonous air released by the plant.\u003cbr/\u003eSome protesters on Saturday said they wake up in the middle of the night from the smell, and worry that the gas released from the burning of waste affects their health.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The garbage centre's poisonous air has done very severe harm to people here. This has aroused public anger of residents in the neighbourhoods,\" said protester Hao Li.\u003cbr/\u003eGuo Tuanhui, the waste centre's Communist Party branch secretary, questioned the residents' anger, saying \"What (rubbish) landfill is not smelly?\"\u003cbr/\u003e\"China has a different situation and our rubbish is more smelly and the odours are more difficult to control. Since we started a little late and we are still working on solving difficult problems, I hope the residents can understand,\" Guo said.\u003cbr/\u003eIn an effort to reduce the smell, trucks were
