Take this village, Hua Mae Kum, for example, it is in a very remote area. It's very difficult for the people here to go anywhere. These vulnerable people can be minorities who live in the area or they can be migrants, legal or illegal. What makes them vulnerable is a number of things. One is their cultural difference.They have own specific culture with their own beliefs, with their own understanding of what is health, what causes health and what represents treatment. There is a language barrier. There is a difference in ethnic group. The health providers are usually from the majority ethnic group while the minorities are obviously facing a cultural barrier. Second is the question of civil registration. If people are not properly registered and identified, they will not also be budgeted for in the social services and that makes access and funding services for them quite a challenge. And thirdly, of course, due to the nature here, minorities live very often in very remote villages. Yesterday, we were struggling in the mud for several hours to reach some of these remote villages. Various of a health care provider giving a vaccination shot to a baby\u003cbr/\u003eThe United Nations marks Indigenous People's day on August 9, 2007 to highlight issues facing some of the world's most vulnerable communities. \u003cbr/\u003eIn Thailand migrant groups, many of whom of indigenous Myanmarese (also known as Burmese) who do not have citizenship in Thailand find it hard to gain access to health care and other social services.\u003cbr/\u003eOn top of this the remoteness of many communities means they rely on services coming to them. \u003cbr/\u003eHua Mae Kum village in Thailand, is hidden in the mist, invisible to the rest of the world, for much of the year. \u003cbr/\u003eOn a recent clear spell doctors travelled to this remote part of the country to give medical help those who need it.  \u003cbr/\u003eIn their colourful traditional dress, many so-called indigenous and migrant people have walked for hours through muddy roads to reach the temporary health post.\u003cbr/\u003eAmong them are displaced migrants from the Shan State of Myanmar (also known as Burma) which borders the North of Thailand, and indigenous minorities who may live inside Thailand but do not have Thai citizenship. \u003cbr/\u003eThese people usually do not have access to health services of any kind. \u003cbr/\u003eBut they were told that they would not be treated any differently today. \u003cbr/\u003eThe temporary health care facility is funded by the European Commission and run by the International Organisation for Migration with the Thai Ministry of Public Health to provide a basic health care service to the migrant population along the border of Thailand and Myanmar. \u003cbr/\u003eA village like this will be visited by a group of health workers at least four times a year. \u003cbr/\u003eBasic health care services that are given includes birth control, prevention of communicable diseases, and other primary care to anyone who comes to the clinic. \u003cbr/\u003eAt least three ethnic groups with different languages and cultures are represented in this village. \u003cbr/\u003eMembers of each of ethnic groups are trained to provide health care and are brought in to bridge the language and cultural gaps between the health workers from central Thailand and patients from the remote areas.  \u003cbr/\u003eWuthisak Wipuwirojkul comes from a village nearby and is a member of the Lesu hill tribe. He was chosen to be trained as a health care provider.\u003cbr/\u003eToday he is giving a lecture on the topic of Malaria in his local tongue to a group of migrants. \u003cbr/\u003eHe thinks this service is vital for the mountain communities. \u003cbr/\u003eKalyarat Besae says this health facility is good news for her. \u003cbr/\u003eAlthough she has lived and grown up inside the Thailand border, she does not yet have Thai citizenship.\u003cbr/\u003eTravelling to a clinic from where she lives would be hard anyway, but she would not be qualified to receive any health care at any place except this temporary clinic.  \u003cbr/\u003eThai health workers are seeing and treating approximately 33,000 people in remote areas thanks to funding from the European Union. \u003cbr/\u003eFilip de Loof is a programme Officer from the European Commission Delegation in Thailand. \u003cbr/\u003eHe says it is important to provide health care to migrants and indigenous people who would otherwise receive none.\u003cbr/\u003eDe Loof says these groups of people are vulnerable due to cultural, language, remote locations of their homes and the fact that they are not registered in the country. \u003cbr/\u003eWith this \"Migrant Health Project\", Filip de Loof hopes that it will raise the awareness of the issue within a host country like Thailand and encourage the important role of providing health care to hidden people.\u003cbr/\u003eWith more training on offer it is also hoped that migrant and indigenous health care workers will provide treatment to their own villages and
