Wide shot sunset\u003cbr/\u003eAmid concerns that migrating birds may spread the deadly bird flu virus to Israel, an Israeli ornithologist has urged the government to work with researchers to track and test migrating flocks.\u003cbr/\u003eMillions of birds pass through Israel twice a year. \u003cbr/\u003eIsrael has no confirmed cases of bird flu, but Europe and Asia have seen cases of the deadly virus, which has killed more than 60 people in Asia.\u003cbr/\u003eFrom the autumn onwards, migration originates from Europe and Asia, and so Israel needs to focus on detecting the virus in migrating birds quickly, according to Dr. Yossi Leshem, director of Israel's International Centre for the Study of Bird Migration.\u003cbr/\u003eLeshem described Israel as a \"bottleneck\" for bird migration - a place millions of birds use as a stopover point between Europe and Asia and their wintering grounds in Africa. \u003cbr/\u003eHe says \"chances are high\" that avian flu will eventually make its way to Israel, just as migrating birds are blamed for spreading the virus to Europe.\u003cbr/\u003e\"This is one of the hotspots in the world,\" Leshem said. \"We know that we have about 500 million birds that are migrating over Israel twice a year - definitely a huge number.\"\u003cbr/\u003eWhile dead birds are tested for avian flu, the Israeli government doesn't test live migratory birds, but Leshem said a system could be developed, with stations such as the Jerusalem Bird Observatory (JBO) and the bird migration centre in Latrun to test up to 100 birds a week.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The concept is to develop a national monitoring system that is connected,\" Leshem said. \"We can provide the government every week with a hundred birds, and we can take samples from the birds to be checked in the veterinary system to see if they have the flu. And this (tracking) can be done online, as we are now doing for the air force. We can do the same with the flu.\"\u003cbr/\u003eLeshem, who has been working with the Israeli Air Force for three decades watching flocks of birds in an attempt to avoid collisions with planes, said the infrastructure was already in place to test live birds.\u003cbr/\u003eIsrael's International Centre for the Study of Bird Migration now uses radar, satellites and radar tags to track flocks and individual birds on their migratory routes.\u003cbr/\u003eLeshem's research has successfully reduced the number of mid-air collisions between Israeli Air force planes and birds by 76 percent. \u003cbr/\u003eNow he's confident that a combination of high-tech tracking and basic tagging methods can be just as effective in monitoring avian flu.\u003cbr/\u003eWorking with the International Centre for the Study of Bird Migration, JBO and four other bird observation stations along bird routes, Leshem says Israel can test daily for the virus. The tests generate results in 12 hours and mean Israel can respond quickly to contain any detected outbreaks of the virus.\u003cbr/\u003eThe International Centre for Bird Migration is discussing with the Israeli health ministry implementation of the track and test programme, which would cost an estimated two million shekels (430-thousand US dollars) a year.\u003cbr/\u003eLeshem said a decision on
