And this is something that needs to be dealt with as soon as possible.\" \u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Mark Sullivan, protestor\u003cbr/\u003eThe protestors marched from the White House through Washington, to the Chinese Embassy, where they held a candlelight vigil.\u003cbr/\u003eIn New York, hundreds of protesters braved the winter cold \u003cbr/\u003eThe gathering outside the United Nations included both Tibetans and Chinese who claimed to be united in their cause against the central government in Beijing.\u003cbr/\u003eChina claims Tibet was historically a Chinese province, but Tibetans say the mountainous region has been independent for generations.\u003cbr/\u003eThere has been a growth of interest in Buddhism in the West in recent years, and with it a growing awareness of the Tibetan plight.\u003cbr/\u003eHigh-profile celebrities like actor Richard Gere have spoken out in support of Tibetan self-rule.\u003cbr/\u003eTibetans say that in October 1950, 40 (th) thousand Chinese troops \"invaded\" Tibet.\u003cbr/\u003eBut Chinese leader Mao Zedong saw the sending in of  his army as a 'liberation' of a historically Chinese province.\u003cbr/\u003eIn London, there was another protest outside the Chinese embassy.\u003cbr/\u003eThis demonstration was peaceful in comparison to those in New Delhi and Dharmsala in India, and Paris in France.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, has acknowledged frustration is mounting among younger Tibetans, who oppose his non-violent policy of conciliation with China.\u003cbr/\u003eSince the Dalai Lama fled, about 120-thousand Tibetans have followed him into exile in India. \u003cbr/\u003eThousands more live in Europe and North America.\u003cbr/\u003e Washington D.C, New York USA/ London, UK  - 10 March 1999\u003cbr/\u003eAPTN - Washington, D.C. - March 10, 1999\u003cbr/\u003e1.
