Wide of elephant kicking ball to camera\u003cbr/\u003eIn the South African Little Karoo, three rather special employees are getting stuck into the business of wine making. \u003cbr/\u003eThe fruits of their labour will be available this summer, so if you''re looking for an alternative tipple, perhaps a bottle of Elephant Ros� could be the order of the day. \u003cbr/\u003eThey say an elephant never forgets, but these South African connoisseurs may be forgiven for being a little bit fuzzy about their duties. \u003cbr/\u003eThey''re the latest team members of the Boplaas Winery.\u003cbr/\u003eNestled deep in the heart of the world-renowned Caliztdorp region in the Western Cape, the harvest season brings much excitement.\u003cbr/\u003eTons of Pinotage and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are picked for the season''s wine-making. \u003cbr/\u003eThe region is also known for producing excellent port wines and has won many accolades locally and abroad.\u003cbr/\u003eThis year the farm is looking forward to a rather special vintage of elephantine proportions with an eco-friendly twist. \u003cbr/\u003eMeet Neliaka, Jubari, and Bulelu, the heaviest land animals in the world and part-time grape crushers.\u003cbr/\u003eThey are tasked with making this year''s Boplaas Winery Elephant Vintages. \u003cbr/\u003eAll three have a good eye for a great grape \u003cbr/\u003eWeighing in at about 3.5 tonnes, these African elephants have been specially trained by the Knysna Elephant Park to crush thousands of juicy grapes for a few days at the beginning of the harvest. \u003cbr/\u003eTheir massive feet get a gentle wash and scrub before they embark on the day''s grape crushing, just as their human counterparts did hundreds of years ago. \u003cbr/\u003eStanding in front of a large metal trough, these 12ft-tall giants crush hundreds of grapes with their 2ft-wide feet. \u003cbr/\u003eThey''re hard and loyal workers, even if they do seize the opportunity to snatch the odd mouthful of tasty morsels on the job. \u003cbr/\u003eCommands like foot up and foot down are given to the elephants and they respond with acute awareness. \u003cbr/\u003eCurious onlookers eagerly take photos of the elephants as a memento to show to relatives and friends when they are sipping on the ros� back home.\u003cbr/\u003eFittingly, the idea came about over a bottle of red wine. \u003cbr/\u003eIan Withers, the owner of the Knysna Elephant Park and Carel Nel, the owner of Boplaas vineyard were chatting about how grapes used to be pressed in the old days and the Boplass Elephant Rose was born.\u003cbr/\u003eThere''s more to this than a good photo opportunity for Boplaas vineyard. \u003cbr/\u003eThe wine makers use the occasion to highlight the plight faced by some African Elephants that are poached in African reserves.\u003cbr/\u003eHowever, these three seem totally unaware of the troubles that face their cousins.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The elephants are not aware that they are treading the grapes, they think it''s a fun game and they eat more than they tread, the grapes, and they are enjoying it,\" says Rozanne Nel, Marketing Director at Boplaas Winery.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe juice of the crushed grapes is then transported to the cellars and stored in fermentation vessels until matured.\u003cbr/\u003eThe message behind this wine enhances its appeal, but the Boplaas Elephant Ros� has also become popular for its fine drinking and ease on the palate. \u003cbr/\u003e\"I think its a great idea - elephants are very natural and they are very heavy and they can actually do the work.
