Close of little girl\u003cbr/\u003eA recently arrived mosquito-borne virus that causes an abrupt onset of high fever and intense joint pain is rapidly gaining a foothold in many spots of the Caribbean. \u003cbr/\u003eThe often painful illness most commonly found in Asia and Africa was first detected in December in tiny St. Martin. \u003cbr/\u003eIt was the first time that local transmission of chikungunya had been reported in the Americas. \u003cbr/\u003eSince then, it has spread to nearly a dozen other islands including Cuba, Haiti and French Guiana, an overseas department of France on the north shoulder of South America.\u003cbr/\u003eIt is rarely fatal and most chikungunya patients rebound within a week, but some people experience joint pain for months to years. \u003cbr/\u003eThey suffer searing headaches, a burning fever and so much pain in their joints they can barely walk or use their hands. \u003cbr/\u003eIt's like having a terrible flu combined with an abrupt case of arthritis. \u003cbr/\u003eHospitals and clinics throughout the Caribbean are seeing thousands of people with the same symptoms.\u003cbr/\u003eThey are victims of a virus with a long and unfamiliar name that has been spread rapidly by mosquitoes across the Caribbean islands after the first locally transmitted case was confirmed in December. \u003cbr/\u003e\"It gives you fever, headaches, body aches. This pain is ruining me,\" says Estephanie Lara, a Dominican woman waiting in the crowded halls of a hospital in the beach town of Boca Chica on the Dominican Republic. \u003cbr/\u003eThe virus is chikungunya, derived from an African word that loosely translates as \"contorted with pain.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThose encountering it in the Caribbean for the first time say the description is fitting. \u003cbr/\u003eWhile the virus is rarely fatal it is extremely debilitating. \u003cbr/\u003e\"Headache, fever, body aches, my legs are swollen. I have a severe stomach ache since yesterday,\" says  Marlenyis Reyes, a woman suffering from symptoms of chikungunya virus and waiting to get care at the hospital in Boca Chica.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Pan American Health Organisation reports around 50,000 suspected and confirmed cases between December 2013  and May 2014  throughout the Caribbean.\u003cbr/\u003e10,000 those of those cases were in the Dominican Republic. \u003cbr/\u003eSo far, there are no signs the virus is keeping visitors away from the Caribbean though some officials warn they might if it is not controlled.\u003cbr/\u003eDan Turquell, an American tourist vacationing in Boca Chica says he had yet to hear about the virus.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I know that mosquitoes carry malaria, also yellow fever. But I am not aware of this one,\" Turquell says  . \u003cbr/\u003eThere have been no confirmed cases of local transmission of chikungunya on the U.S. mainland, but experts say the high number of travellers to the Caribbean means that could change as early as this summer. \u003cbr/\u003e\"What we're seeing now is an increase in the number of infected travellers coming from the Caribbean, which is expected because there's a lot of US travel, a lot of vacation travel, a lot of work travel, um, between the mainland and the Caribbean island countries where the virus is now spreading,\" says   Dr. Roger Nasci, Chief of the Arboviral Diseases Branch Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Division of Vector Borne Diseases in Colorado. \u003cbr/\u003e\"I believe it's inevitable that it will occur, it's very difficult to predict where when and to what degree,\" he adds. \u003cbr/\u003eIn the Dominican Republic, authorities are attempting to control mosquitoes from dense urban neighbourhoods to beach resorts. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Ministry of Public Health has sent out health workers to educate locals about the virus and urge people to remove standing pools of water where mosquitoes breed. \u003cbr/\u003eLocal authorities have also been spraying fogs of pesticides. \u003cbr/\u003e\"We are spraying these neighbourhoods because a few days ago we had suspected cases of the chikungunya virus,\" says Jose Meran, a coordinator with the Ministry of Public Health.\u003cbr/\u003eThe pesticides commonly sprayed are considered low-toxic to mammals. They have been spraying to control dengue in this region for years so the spraying, while increased, isn't new. \u003cbr/\u003eChikungunya was identified in Africa in 1953 and is found throughout the tropics of the Eastern Hemisphere. \u003cbr/\u003eIt is spread by two species of mosquitoes, aedes aegypti and aedes albopictus. It's also a traveller-borne virus under the right circumstances. \u003cbr/\u003eIt can spread to a new area if someone has it circulating in their system during a relatively short period of time, roughly 2-3 days before the onset of symptoms to 5 days after, and then arrives to an area with the right kind of mosquitoes. \u003cbr/\u003eThe first locally transmitted case of the virus was documented in December in French St. Martin, likely brought over by an infected air traveller. \u003cbr/\u003eThere is no vaccine for the virus and the only cure is treatment for the pain and fluid loss. \u003cbr/\u003eFor years, there have been sporadic cases of travellers diagnosed with chikungunya but without local transmission. \u003cbr/\u003eIn 2007, there was an outbreak in northern Italy.\u003cbr/\u003eOne thing is certain: The virus has found fertile ground in the Caribbean.\u003cbr/\u003eThe symptoms of chikungunya include not just a sharp fever but also headache, full-body rash and joint pain. The illness is rarely fatal but recovery usually takes about a week. Some people experience joint pain for months to years.\u003cbr/\u003eSince the virus was first documented in Haiti in May, there have been nearly 40,000 suspected cases seen by health workers, the Pan American Health Organization says. \u003cbr/\u003eThe only places with higher numbers are the neighbouring Dominican Republic and Guadaloupe.\u003cbr/\u003eBut there are many signs that the actual number is far higher in Haiti, a country of 10 million people that struggles with many burdens, from crushing poverty, lack of access to clean water and the fact that some 146,000 people displaced by the January 2010 earthquake still live in makeshift homes.\u003cbr/\u003eThe U.S. Centers for Disease Control is now assisting Haiti's health ministry to confirm new cases. But statistics are notoriously unreliable in Haiti, and public health experts say the number of people with the illness is unknown.\u003cbr/\u003eClients are reminded: \u003cbr/\u003e(i) to check the
