The auction will benefit a drug and alcohol rehabilitation center founded by Clapton in...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eEnglish/Nat\u003cbr/\u003eChristie's New York on Thursday previewed some of the 100 guitars owned by Eric Clapton that will be put to auction later this month. \u003cbr/\u003eThe auction will benefit a drug and alcohol rehabilitation center founded by Clapton in Antigua.\u003cbr/\u003eEstimated prices for some of the items on sale range from one thousand five hundred (U-S) dollars to more than one hundred and twenty thousand (U-S) dollars.\u003cbr/\u003eThe sale represents the largest single-owner sale of guitars associated with one of the most famous living rock artists. \u003cbr/\u003eEven though he wasn't there Eric Clapton's guitars spoke volumes about the music of this rock and roll legend. \u003cbr/\u003eThe selection of 100 Clapton guitars, which will hit Christie's auction block on June 24th,  spans three decades of Clapton's musical career.\u003cbr/\u003eThe most important guitar in the sale is \"Brownie,\" Clapton's 1956 sunburst Fender Stratocaster. \u003cbr/\u003eThis was one of his favorite guitars, now estimated to be worth between 75 and 120 thousand (U-S) dollars. \u003cbr/\u003e\"Brownie\" was the guitar on which Clapton played probably his most famous love song of all, \"Layla\", with its memorable opening riff.\u003cbr/\u003eEarlier in June, Clapton posed with his guitars at Christie's pre-auction showing in London.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English) \u003cbr/\u003e\"But the other day I was here on my own with them all (guitars), in fact, I was not alone, I was doing something with V-H-1 where I could see them all and they were asking me questions about them. And it was quite an emotional moment. Not only is Eric parting with some of his most famous and favorite guitars, but he's also sharing with us his personal memories, and information behind it and some of his most private thoughts about the instruments.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Nancy Valentino, Senior Vice President of Christie's Marketing\u003cbr/\u003eSome of the guitars to be auctioned date from Clapton's years as a solo artist beginning in the early 1970's. \u003cbr/\u003eMany were played during the artist's numerous stage performances, while a few were crafted especially for Clapton. \u003cbr/\u003eVarious models include Fender, Gibson, Martin and Guild. \u003cbr/\u003eFor some it's like a guitar museum of the 20th century.\u003cbr/\u003eOne of the most valuable production guitars in history, an extremely rare Gibson Explorer with its experimental solid body guitar design, will also be featured in the sale - the estimated price is available strictly on request.\u003cbr/\u003eOne of only 19 commercially released in 1958, Clapton purchased this particular guitar in the 1980's. \u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE:  (English)\u003cbr/\u003e\"This guitar itself is worth well over 100 thousand dollars, just as an object, without any connection to any artists, but Eric Clapton's Explorer, seeing he's the world's most famous guitarist, and the world's rarest production guitar, used on the Arms Tour.\" \u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Richard Chapman, Guitar Expert\u003cbr/\u003eClapton will also sell one of his main acoustic guitars, a 1974 Martin 000-28 steel string acoustic, which he used extensively in the mid-1970's. \u003cbr/\u003eIt is estimated to be worth between 15 to 23 thousand (U-S) dollars. \u003cbr/\u003eThe auction will benefit the Crossroads Centre at Antigua, an international alcohol and drug rehabilitation center which was founded by Clapton in 1997.\u003cbr/\u003e New York City/London - 17 June/01 June, 1999 and file \u003cbr/\u003eNew York City - 17 June, 1999\u003cbr/\u003e1.
