The refugees, who fled from last year's bloody...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eEnglish/Nat\u003cbr/\u003eZairean soldiers have temporarily stopped forcing refugees from Burundi and Rwanda back to their own countries while a deal is worked out to repatriate them under U-N auspices.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe refugees, who fled from last year's bloody civil war in Rwanda, fled in panic this week when the Zairean military began to expel them from their camps. \u003cbr/\u003eThursday's move eases fears of a new humanitarian disaster, but it is unclear how long the Zairean army will refrain from a return to force.\u003cbr/\u003eThere was little activity around the camps on Thursday as refugees waited for Zairean and U-N authorities to decide their fate.\u003cbr/\u003eU-N officials believe many of the refugees in Goma are ready to go  home voluntarily, but have been prevented from doing so by Hutu extremists - mainly soldiers and paramilitaries who fled to the camps along with the civilians.\u003cbr/\u003eMany of the extremists were guilty of taking part in widespread genocide against Tutsis before they fled Rwanda.\u003cbr/\u003eWe understand that there's been a lot of flight of the extremists, of the Interhamwe, those people who were impeding the return of the refugees. We understand that a lot of these have now left the camps, even the camps where the Zairean military operation hadn't started. It now seems that the refugees are expressing their own wishes which had been previously impeded, and they now want to go home.\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Chris Bowers, UNHCR spokesman\u003cbr/\u003eMany Hutu refugees are still hiding in the hills, afraid that if they return to the camps they will be hounded by Zairean soldiers.\u003cbr/\u003eThe UNHCR is waiting for confirmation from Zaire that the new hands-off policy will continue. \u003cbr/\u003eYou can clearly see that on the ground there has been a suspension of the previous policy by the Zairians, there have been no people expelled today, and we are seeking assurances currently that that will continue tomorrow.\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Chris Bowers, UNHCR spokesman\u003cbr/\u003eThe border between Rwanda and Zaire remained quiet today as refugees waited to hear whether it would be safe to return. \u003cbr/\u003eWe have very strong indications in the form of letters from the refugees, from refugee leaders from a number of camps to say that they are now ready to go home, under UNHCR guidelines, in UNHCR trucks in fact.\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Chris Bowers, UNHCR spokesman\u003cbr/\u003eAid workers have taken to the hills with loudspeakers to try to persuade refugees who fled there to return to their camps and await an orderly repatriation.
