Various exteriors of Vienna Opera
A colony of bees is thriving on the roof top of Vienna''s Opera House.
The flowers of the capital produce a rich diet that makes a popular aromatic honey.
These are busy, busy bees hard at work on their honeycomb.
Theirs is a room with a view, the penthouse hives on the roof of one of Vienna''s grandest buildings - the State Opera.
Here, right in the centre of the Austrian capital, these bees are surprisingly productive.
Last year Friedrich Haselsteiner and his colleague Heidrun Singer put the bees on the opera roof.
Now it''s time to check what progress they have made.
Lighting his cigar is a kind of a ritual for Friedrich Haselsteiner. He smokes not for fun but because smoke calms the bees and lets him get down to work.
The bees have been surprisingly productive, given their inner city location.
Not that surprising, says Haselsteiner:
"At the results you can see that the bees find excellent food sources, because the honey harvest is a mirror image of the fact that the supply of food is enormous in this environment."
For Heidrun Singer, bringing the bees into the heart of the city is part of a mission to recognise the huge importance of a healthy bee population for the rest of nature:
"We especially wanted to show people that the bee is such a small animal, but it''s still the third most important farm animal. That was actually the main reason why we went to the city with our bees."
Put on the opera roof in 2010 to celebrate the "year of biodiversity" the honey tastes just as good, if not better than honey from the countryside.
Vienna is not just famous for its architecture, it is also a very green city.
Less than a kilometre away lies the imperial Burggarten, just one of many green oases in this city.
Contrary to popular belief cities can be actually better places for beekeeping than the country, says Heidrun Singer:
"Of course the city is a very healthy place for bees I would say, because there is a very diverse supply of food year-round. In the countryside we have the problem of monoculture and a very one-sided diet for the bees. It''s just like with humans. A diverse diet is simply better than a one-sided diet."
Haselsteiner agrees:
"When I compare my beehives from the countryside with those we have in the city then the development begins earlier. It''s warmer in Vienna than back home in the mountains. The development starts earlier."
Professor Karl Crailsheim from the University of Graz is an expert in apiculture (beekeeping).
The Faculty of Zoology has been a centre for bee research since the 1960''s.
For professor Crailsheim, city-beekeeping is nothing new. In fact beekeepers have been doing it in cities like New York for almost a century.
Compared to country bees, honey from city bees may be more organic, and is probably going to be more complex, according to Professor Crailsheim:
"One of the criteria for organic honey is that the honey has to bee free of pesticides and in cities people usually don''t apply pesticides on a large scale. Contamination through dust that can harm the lungs of humans doesn''t affect honey quality. Beyond that city honey is good because it comes from a multitude of plants and people quite possibly appreciate this mix of different aromas."
But bees are increasingly under pressure.
The university is part of Project COLOSS (Prevention of COlony LOSSes) that is monitoring the health of beehives all over Europe.
In this fitness test the endurance of bees from different hives is tested by means of an artificially modelled long-range flight.
During the past few years there has been a steady decline in beehives.
While the situation in Austria has been relatively stable, beekeepers in neighbouring Germany haven''t been so lucky.
Entire colonies were lost last year.
Besides mono cropping and pesticides there is another enemy says Professor Crailsheim:
"The main reason for the current dieback of beehives in Europe is certainly the Varroa mite. But inseparable from that are strains accompanying the Varroa. That means diverse viral infections. The fact is that due to the contamination with Varroa mites the hives are more susceptible to environmental strains - be it variations in temperature or pesticides."
The Varroa mite arrived in Europe from Asia around 20 years ago.
Since then it has been wreaking havoc among European bees that are less resistant to the parasite than their Asian relatives.
It attacks bees from an early stage like these artificially raised larvae. Once a hive is infected it is very difficult to remove the Varroa.
Formic acid has become the favoured remedy for beekeepers in Europe. But hives all over the continent are infected.
Saving the bee population could be a race against time says Heidrun Singer:
"Of course we have the problem that some agricultural areas are being used one-sidedly. We also can''t deny the problematic use of pesticides. But luckily that hasn''t been the case in Austria on such a large scale and it''s not yet too late. It''s five minutes to midnight, but it''s not past twelve yet. People can still do something indeed."
Another problem for the bee population is that there are fewer and fewer beekeepers.
Without enough bees crops don''t get pollinated. For some Lower Austrian farmers last year''s cherry harvest, destined for the distinctive regional cherry liqueur, simply didn''t happen.
The bees on Vienna''s Opera House are proof that city honey can hit the high notes and may encourage more beekeepers to help preserve one of nature''s most productive species.

<div
