Tight of sign, shift focus to streetlamps
Ironing is not only hard work, it can be expensive too .
So what better way than to syphon off energy from a rubbish dump to drastically cut electricity bills?
Rubbish - and mountains of it.
Residents of Payatas village in the Philippines live just a stone's throw away from the city dumpsite in the suburb of Quezon City, north of Manila.
Many of the villagers work at the site as local authority employees.
But many more work informally in junkshops surrounding the site, making a living out of sorting through the rubbish to find anything useful.
More recently, the residents got another benefit from the city's refuse.
They now have access to free electricity thanks to the conversion of methane coming out of the garbage mound.
Prior to 2001, smoke, diseases, and one particularly bad accident dubbed a "trash slide" characterised life in and around the dumpsite.
("Trash slide" refers to an incident in 2000 when garbage loosened by continuous rains slid off the side of the mountain of rubbish, burying more than 300 people).
With the new city administration in 2001 came new management of the dumpsite.
The first thing the head of the city's Payatas Operations Group, Jameel Jaymalin, noticed was the smoke. But he was able to see beyond this when he observed residents using the methane gas coming out of the dump for fuel.
They did this by attaching makeshift pipes to their stoves for cooking.
That idea led to a "green" revolution - the rubbish mound became a controlled dumpsite by
adding a layering of garden soil, and by connecting a series of gas pipes and vents to draw the methane out.
The next step was to harness the methane being collected instead of just burning it off.
Now there's a community ironing centre. One resident, Teresita Mabignay, says
"We really save a lot when we do our ironing here, we save a lot on electricity. Before, I used to pay 1,500-pesos (US$32), now I only pay around P700 (US$15). My bill has been reduced a lot because I used to iron clothes everyday, like the children's school uniform, but now I just schedule my trip here to do all my ironing at once."
And the scheme has encouraged a closer community spirit.
Another resident, Jen Tolentino, says "I do all my ironing here. What I do is round up my women friends to come up here so that it would not be boring. Some who have totally done away with ironing their clothes because of the cost are now coming here after I told them all that here it is for free."
Note:
In 2003, the Philippines signed the Kyoto Protocol paving the way for the country to engage in carbon trading through the United Nation's "Clean Development Mechanism" or CDM.
CDM is an arrangement under the Kyoto Protocol allowing industrialised countries to invest in projects that reduce emissions in developing countries in place of emission reductions in their own countries.
In 2004, a pilot 100-kilowatt pilot methane power plant was established by the city government as a model for gas-to-power generation project.
And in 2007 an Italian firm, Pangea Green Energy Srl, came into the picture to create a bigger plant that would convert biogas emissions to electricity and enable it to trade emission reduction certificates under the CDM.
The project was registered as a CDM Project Activity on February 1, 2008 making it the first CDM project in solid waste disposal in the Philippines and in Southeast Asia.
The whole dumpsite of 10 hectares is expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by an annual average of 116,000 tons of CO2e (carbon dioxide equivalent) for the next ten years, long after the dumpsite's closure in 2010.
Keyword wacky

<button
