Another pan of oil ships \u003cbr/\u003eCrews were hoping to lower a 100-ton concrete-and-steel box a mile under the Gulf of Mexico on Thursday to cut off most of the hundreds of thousands of gallons of oil spewing from a blown-out well. \u003cbr/\u003eIf this would work, the system could collect as much as 85 percent of the oil that's been leaking from the ocean floor after the Deepwater Horizon rig exploded on April 20, killing 11 workers. \u003cbr/\u003eCrews are also drilling a relief well to take the pressure off the blown-out well at the site, and that could take up to three months. Other possible solutions are also in the works. \u003cbr/\u003eMeanwhile, Transocean Limited said that it continues to investigate what caused the blast. \u003cbr/\u003eThe rig owner said in a conference call with investors that it's working with BP PLC, which leased the rig, to stop the flow of oil from a subsea well that is leaking into the Gulf at an estimated rate of 210-thousand barrels per day. \u003cbr/\u003eCEO for Transoscean Limited Steven Newman said that the contract for the rig calls for BP to be liable for any pollution or contamination caused by the incident. He said the company expects BP to honour that contract. Newman cautioned that it is too early to speculate on the cause of the explosion. \u003cbr/\u003eCommercial fishermen, business and resort owners, charter boat captains and even would-be vacationers have filed lawsuits from Texas to Florida. \u003cbr/\u003eAttorneys filed a petition late on Wednesday with the US Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation to consolidate the cases before a single judge. Once selected, that judge would make key decisions such as whether the lawsuits should be dismissed or proceed to trial. \u003cbr/\u003eMore than 200-thousand gallons of oil a day is pouring from the well, creating a massive sheen that's been floating on the Gulf for more than two weeks. \u003cbr/\u003eAs it moved closer to land, crews were frantically laying boom and taking other steps to prevent it from oozing into delicate coastal wetlands. At sea, some boats were using skimmers to suck up oil while others were corralling and setting fire to it to burn it off the surface.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Joe Griffin, the ship carrying the containment box that will be lowered to the seafloor, arrived on Thursday morning at the leak site about 50 miles (80 kilometre) offshore.\u003cbr/\u003eWorkers hope to have the device down at the seabed by Thursday evening, but it will likely be Sunday or Monday before it's fully operational and they know if it's working. \u003cbr/\u003eThe waters were calm on Thursday with some clouds in the sky, though visibility was good. \u003cbr/\u003eRoughly a dozen other ships either surrounded the site or could be seen in the distance. Thick, tar-like oil with a pungent scent surrounded the boat as far as the eye could see. \u003cbr/\u003eAnother BP-chartered boat will use a crane to lower the box - something that has never been tried before at such depths. BP spokesman Bill Salvin said the drop is expected at about noon Thursday. \u003cbr/\u003eOil has been leaking in three places since the explosion. One small leak was capped on Wednesday. \u003cbr/\u003eThe containment box will be lowered over a much bigger leak in a pipe that's responsible for about 85 percent of the oil that's coming out.\u003cbr/\u003eA federal judicial panel in Washington has been asked to consolidate at least 65 potential class action lawsuits claiming economic damage from the Gulf oil
