VS World Laughter Day March\u003cbr/\u003eHealth, happiness and world peace became a laughing matter Sunday, for this year's World Laughter Day.\u003cbr/\u003eTwo thousand people from around Germany joined the convention to celebrate the day, while thousands more giggled in laughter clubs around the world.\u003cbr/\u003eThis year's annual event was held to coincide with a humour convention in Stuttgart.  The events founder was the guest of honour - practising GP Dr Madan Kataria, who began the concept of therapeutic laughter clubs five years ago with the Juhu Beach laughter club at Mumbai (Bombay). \u003cbr/\u003eThe family physician invited five of his patients into a city park to experiment with the healing qualities of laughter, and found the effect on their spirits and health was striking, \u003cbr/\u003eDr Kataria - now president of Laughter Club International, and known as the guru of giggles - describes the clubs as Hasya Yoga, a yogic laughter practice.  \u003cbr/\u003eGroups are led through systematic laughter exercises - no jokes are used as humour is considered too subjective.  Instead, the aim is  laughter for laughter's sake, with  adults coming together, making eye contact and chortling as hard as they can by way of aerobic workout. \u003cbr/\u003eThere are 500 laughter clubs in the United States alone.  Exercises include the 'lion laugh' where participants hold up their hands, stick out and tounges and roar with laughter; the  'elephant laugh' where members stretch one arm in front of their heads like the trunk of an elephant and chortle like a pachyderm; copying a leader's bellows; or ritual laugh patterns alternated with rounds of deep breathing. \u003cbr/\u003eThe benefits are believed to be widespread - from boosting the immune system to reducing stress and the risk of heart disease.\u003cbr/\u003eThe clubs claim the practise offer an aerobic workout for heart and lungs, a decrease in the negative effects of stress, improved digestion, stabilised mood, a rest for the brain and enhanced  communication.\u003cbr/\u003eDr Kataria invented World Laughter Day with support from his wife Madhuri in 1997, and the event was celebrated for the first time in Mumbai on January 10, 1998.
