Child eating fruit from the stall
The 'carbon footprint' of food is becoming a growing concern among UK shoppers.
Food miles-conscious consumers visit London's only weekday farmers' market because they can be assured that all products have only travelled a short distance from their provenance.
One small cooperative in east London grows its own produce and rather than distributing it, asks customers to pick up their vegetable boxes once a week.
You can spot the odd bike at London's only weekday market.
But shoppers who travel there by car do have a reasonable excuse.
This weekly event is held in the corner of a large car park which is shared by several retailers including DIY giant 'Homebase'.
Shoppers with a green conscience can console themselves at least that all the vegetables, food, bread and meet on sale at Finchley Road Farmers' Market has travelled no further than 100 miles or 161 kilometre radius (the rules for the rest of the country are a 30 mile or 48 kilometre radius).
Food miles (the distance food travels from field to plate) has become a pressing concern with media, politicians and consumers in the United Kingdom in recent months.
As well as the restrictions on food miles, in a proper Farmers' Market stallholders should grow and produce their own food, according to guidelines drawn up by the National Association of Farmers' Markets.
The first UK Farmers' Market began trading in the city of Bath in 1997 and since then hundreds have sprouted across the country including 15 in the capital city (of which only Finchley Road operates during the working week).
At Stephen Pritchard's goats cheese stall, consumers can taste the product before deciding to buy it.
Pritchard says that consumers in the UK are beginning to turn their backs on supermarkets.
He says that here the producers are on hand to explain the product in detail to the shoppers.
Few people can be as qualified to talk about the burgers they are flipping as butcher Michael Belcher who also rears cows at his family farm in Leicestershire.
Belcher explains how close he is to the entire process, from the beginning of the animal's life to its end.
The direct contact with the food supplier is one of the key attractions of a farmers' market for Janet Ellen Harriman, an American who's lived in London for nearly a decade.
Harriman shops at the Finchley Road Farmers' market and says that she is pleased to know that the profits are benefiting the people who produced the food directly.
Zozzy Hocking, is a mother of two and a social worker.
She says she prefers to buy locally produced food to reduce carbon emissions from the transport of food around the country.
Tonia Van Der Zyden takes her bread stall to various different farmers markets across the capital.
She says the only way you could get fresher bread is to bake it yourself.
Many UK politicians are now trying to prove their environmentally friendly credentials in a bid to win voters.
But 'green' politicians and 'green' pressure groups have been campaigning against carbon emissions for many years.
Tony Juniper, is director of environmental lobby group Friends of the Earth.
He says that much of food transport is unnecessary and results in increased carbon dioxide pollution, which is believed to be one of the main causes of global warming.
Lucy Yates, a senior policy advisor National Consumer Council (NCC) UK, says that recent food scares means that consumers in the UK have become more aware of where their food is coming from.
Another 'green' scheme in London is the 'Growing Communities' devised an Organic Fruit and Vegetable Box Scheme.
This provides around 300 local households with fresh, seasonal produce each week.
Most of the vegetables and herbs are grown organically in nearby plots within London's north-east area of Hackney.
Once a week, the produce is gathered and put into used plastic bags, ready for collection.
A standard bag of vegetables costs 8.50 per bag (US$16).
Bags include carrots, onions, potatoes and two greens like spinach, chard, Savoy cabbage, spring greens, lettuce or kale, to name but a few, plus a changing selection of vegetables that are UK and Europe seasonal.
Natalie Silk, who heads the Growing Communities' Box Scheme, explains the concept that although most of the food is grown locally, in the winter when there is a limited supply of freshly grown vegetables available in the UK, they buy some stock in from abroad.
From the early afternoon onwards, regular customers begin to drift into the community's yard to collect their weekly shops.
The scheme also delivers some of the bags to smaller collection points in Hackney in an electric van and by bike.
EDITORIAL NOTE - AP Television approached supermarket chains Sainsburys, Waitrose and
