Crew working on the boat \u003cbr/\u003eAdventurers who conquered Mount Everest are planning to sail around south east Asia in A replica of an ancient boat.\u003cbr/\u003eThe vessel is now on the water after a successful launch.\u003cbr/\u003eThe replica of the balangay, a wooden-hulled boat used in the archipelago about 1,700 years ago began its journey on Saturday, June 27, 2009.\u003cbr/\u003eAbout 300 spectators counted down to the launch, cheering as the bow hit the water in Manila Bay.\u003cbr/\u003eA balangay is a fair-weather, round-bottomed sailboat with a prominent bow. \u003cbr/\u003eIn ancient times, balangays could accommodate as many as 50 people and often entire families lived on board. \u003cbr/\u003eSailors sat on benches attached to the ribs of the hull, and were protected from the sun and rain by a canopy stretched over the central part of the hull.\u003cbr/\u003eNine original balangay boats were discovered in the 1970s in southern Butuan city, three of which are on display in museums. \u003cbr/\u003eOne has been estimated to be at least 1,689 years old based on carbon dating tests.\u003cbr/\u003eRey Santiago, a National Museum Archaelogist, explains the findings:\u003cbr/\u003e\"Based on archaeological evidences, we dated some parts of the balanghai (ancient boat) by radio-carbon 14 dating, and the earliest balanghai that we dated was taken from a wood from Butuan boat and it was dated 320 A.D. And the fifth, number five balanghai, was dated 13th century A.D.\" \u003cbr/\u003eHe says the discoveries show that the ancient boat builders were using advanced technology.\u003cbr/\u003eAlthough balangays are no longer in use, Badjao tribesmen in Tawi Tawi and other tribes still practice the historic  building methods.\u003cbr/\u003eThe boat was built in 44 days by native Badjao boat-builders from the southernmost Philippine province of Tawi Tawi using traditional skills handed down through the generations, not a single nail was used.\u003cbr/\u003eTen Badjao craftsmen were flown to Manila to construct the 50-foot (15-meter) boat.\u003cbr/\u003eCrew member Fred Jamili explains the construction technique:\u003cbr/\u003e\"The system of constructing this boat is entirely different. That with unity anything can be possible.\" \u003cbr/\u003eThe Philippines, formerly among South east Asia's most stable economies, has degenerated into one of the region's economic laggards, often distracted by political conflicts, coup attempts and rampant corruption. \u003cbr/\u003eCommunist and Muslim separatist rebellions have raged for 40 years.\u003cbr/\u003eFive coast guard personnel who won the country's praise in 2006 and 2007 as the first Filipinos to scale Mount Everest will lead the voyage,accompanied by about a dozen expert mariners and navy guards. \u003cbr/\u003eSeafaring Badjao tribesmen will navigate, guided by the stars and other natural indicators.\u003cbr/\u003eA Philippine coast guard patrol ship will tail the boat in case something unforeseen occurs.\u003cbr/\u003eThe crew will sometimes live on the boat and sometimes lodge on land.\u003cbr/\u003eArt Valdez, the project director, says that the people living in what is known as the Philippines were some of the first people in the region to build a boat like this.\u003cbr/\u003e\"More than a thousand years ago, this is the first time that a boat of this kind appeared in this waters, built by our people, the people called now as Filipinos.
