and their livelihood - is turned literally inside out.\u003cbr/\u003eAvila Beach on the central California coast usually draws tourists by the thousands.\u003cbr/\u003eBut nobody is swimming here now - this summer, the beach is closed.\u003cbr/\u003eClosed so that Unocal can demolish Avila's entire commercial beachfront to remove tons of sand and soil contaminated by oil leaked from aging pipelines.\u003cbr/\u003eThree sandy, oily construction pits surrounded by sheet metal have replaced the once thriving boardwalk of funky shops and eateries frequented by tourists and residents alike.\u003cbr/\u003eLast November, after a decade of tests, Unocal agreed to clean out the remnants of crude oil, diesel and gasoline lingering across nine acres under the beach.\u003cbr/\u003eThe estimated cost: two hundred million dollars (US).\u003cbr/\u003eUnocal says a full cleanup requires digging down nearly twenty feet to scoop and skim out an estimated 100-thousand cubic yards of smelly, oil-soaked sand and soil.\u003cbr/\u003eFor most of this century, these pipelines carried millions of barrels of oil each month to tankers that would fill up at the wharf.\u003cbr/\u003eUnocal officials say they can't determine when the pipelines began leaking - although a local resident discovered the contamination through a soil test ten years ago.\u003cbr/\u003e\"There is about close to 400,000 gallons of contamination subsurface here that we are now trying to remove and return this town back to what it was before the contamination.\u003cbr/\u003eSUPERCAPTION: William Sharrer, Project Manager, Unocal\u003cbr/\u003eBut residents say life can never be the same here now that most of the shops and bars that lined the beach - and gave the town its life - have been bulldozed to get at the soil below.\u003cbr/\u003eFifteen buildings have already come down and emotional placards adorn some of the seven others earmarked for removal. \u003cbr/\u003eTwo will be preserved and relocated.\u003cbr/\u003eWhile several Avila residents have packed up and moved to neighboring towns, some diehards refuse to leave this ghost town.\u003cbr/\u003eIt is a painful sight for Julie Andrews-Scott, who grew up on this beach and spent countless hours here with her own daughters - until the excavation made that impossible.\u003cbr/\u003e\"My kids are feeling the effects too, we go to a beach and they say we have to hurry up and have fun here because they are going to dig it up and they are going to tear down our favorite stores so they are pretty traumatized by it too.  It's kind of strange seeing landmarks just being eaten up by big machines.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPERCAPTION: Julie Andrews-Scott, Avila Beach Resident\u003cbr/\u003eTractors are manned from early morning, bringing in fresh soil to fill in the emptied sand pits.\u003cbr/\u003eThe cleanup is a mammoth task that Unocal expects to finish by next summer.\u003cbr/\u003eBut that's scant consolation for the strip's only hotel, where business has plummeted because of the cleanup.\u003cbr/\u003e\"It's just dropped dramatically.  As far as occupancy, as I stated, we're down at least fifty percent.  If we're doing maybe twelve rooms now, we were accustomed at least, this is a thirty two room hotel, we were doing at least during the middle of the week, twenty-six, twenty-seven rooms a night then on the weekends, definite sellouts. They (Unocal) said no because they are selling all the property they own in bulk to a developer.  It's up to the developer.   Business is business and it's high profit.
