Being able to check my email when the train is in the subway is an amazing thing,\" she said.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I love it.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThis comes as part of a 200 (m) million US Dollars plan to connect the subway to the outside world.\u003cbr/\u003eTransit Wireless, the company in charge of building and designing the network, is working with many carriers to provide mobile phone and data connectivity services to all 277 underground stations in New York.\u003cbr/\u003e\"If you are in an emergency, you need to communicate with somebody, you don't have email or anything else functioning, I think it's very useful,\" said Melissa Cardona-Bodhert, a subway passenger who is also happy with connectivity in the subway.\u003cbr/\u003e\"If you've got a long commute that could be as long as, you know, 30 minutes that you are basically without any type of connectivity which is for some people like cutting off their arm,\" said Dawn Callahan, the Vice President of Consumer Marketing for Boingo Wireless.\u003cbr/\u003eBoingo is known for providing Wi-Fi services in airports but now it wants to enter the advertising game.\u003cbr/\u003eBoth companies see the move to wire the subways as an advertising gold mine.\u003cbr/\u003eSponsoring Wi-Fi in the subway provides companies with the chance to advertise to the almost 2 (b) billion subway passengers every year. \u003cbr/\u003eAnd although Google Offers' sponsorship officially ends on Sept. 6th, it could continue.\u003cbr/\u003eBoingo and Transit Wireless said they have others in the pipeline, in case it doesn't.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We definitely think we will be able to have continued sponsorship because this represents a really unique way for advertisers to reach consumers,\" assured Callahan.\u003cbr/\u003eSome of the sponsorship money goes to cover operating costs for the six stations, which Transit Wireless says can cost several thousand dollars a month per station.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) is working with Transit Wireless, but says it will not incur any costs.\u003cbr/\u003e\"There is an explosion of Wi-Fi utilisation right now. There are a lot of new Wi-Fi devices that are entering the marketplace,\" said William Bayne Jr. the CEO of Transit Wireless.\u003cbr/\u003e\"All that is really inviting for sponsors because it really exposes the sponsor's products and services through advertising to billions of ridership over the course of time.\"\u003cbr/\u003eTransit Wireless won the contract to wire the city's 105-year-old subway system in 2007.\u003cbr/\u003eThis won't be an easy task.\u003cbr/\u003eThis project will take almost 7 years because of the complexity of New York's metro system.\u003cbr/\u003eBayne says that the subways' age and the fact that it is open 24/7 presents challenges for the building of system. \u003cbr/\u003eThey have to work on weekends and off-hours to wire the subways.\u003cbr/\u003eIn his office in Queens, Bayne and his staff are working on the next instalment of 30 stations along the west side of Manhattan.\u003cbr/\u003eThey are wiring stations like Times Square and Columbus circle, one of New York's most populous stations.\u003cbr/\u003eAll 277 stations are to be wired within the next six years.\u003cbr/\u003e1.
