Mid shot turkey
Millions of families across the globe are preparing to get together for a traditional Christmas feast.
But as the British Retail Consortium predicts the cost of preparing Christmas dinner at home this year will rise by 2 ($4) per person to nearly 16 ($33) a head, some families will be opting for an alternative to the traditional turkey.
Rising prices have been linked to recent outbreaks of bird flu across the UK and spiralling costs of wheat feed.
The traditional Christmas dinner may well be missing a turkey this year.
Last year, Britons bought more than 10 million turkeys in the run up to Christmas, but this year many will feel the pinch with a family sized fresh organic bird retailing at more than 100 ($204) in many independent outlets.
Rising costs have been linked to increases in the cost of wheat feed and recent outbreaks of bird flu. According to an NFU (National Farmer's Union) survey feed prices have risen 13% since 2006 due to global extremes in weather.
In November this year 6,500 birds were culled when the infection was discovered at Gressingham Food's Redgrave Park Farm, near Diss in Norfolk.
In February more than 160,000 birds were killed after an outbreak of the virulent H5N1 strain of the disease on a Bernard Matthews farm owned by the firm in Suffolk.
Immediately after the Bernard Matthews outbreak, sales of turkey were reported to be down by 30%.
However the owners of the Kingsland family butchers in London say that although more customers have been asking advice about the safety of buying turkey and other poultry for Christmas, so far their trade is has not been greatly effected.
Food Journalist William Sitwell admits that outbreaks of bird flu do negatively affect the way people think about turkey and other poultry, but stresses that the UK has very stringent health and safety regulations, so consumers do not need to be concerned.
Kingsland has been a family run butchers since 1848.
Owner Haden Field says for his customers turkey remains the number one choice.
He points out that many people can be put off turkey, not because of bird flu or rising prices, but because they fear the bird will be dry and tasteless.
Haden says the most popular alternatives for his customers are goose, chicken and game pie as well as traditional English roast beef.
But although he has a selection of poultry to chose from, he says his family sticks to turkey every year.
William Sitwell says he'll be opting for turkey too this year, but adds that if people do go for an alternative they should ensure that the dish has feast-like qualities.
Over at the foodhall in Harrods, staff have little to worry about bird flu affecting sales.
According to spokesman Andre Dang, each time a food scare appears in the news, their poultry sales increase rather than slow down.
Nonetheless, he says that orders for fish and beef dishes including traditional Victorian spiced beef are proving popular this year.
Turkeys are believed to have been brought to Britain in 1526 by Yorkshireman William Strickland who bought six turkeys from American Indian traders and sold them for tuppence in Bristol.
According to Dang the wealthy traditionally ate beef at Christmas, and goose was the number one choice for those not able to afford red meat.
He says that turkey only started to be eaten in the 1500's after it had been bought over from the new world.
Fish and fresh seafood, traditionally eaten on Christmas Eve in many south European countries has been been a popular choice for orders this year.
Deng says that orders of carp, popular in Germany and Austria, are on the rise because it's a traditional choice for east Europeans.
Last year, UK breeders reared more than 17 million turkeys in the UK, some 10 million of which were destined for the Christmas dinner table.
In the US Twenty-two million turkeys are eaten each Christmas in 2007.
