However, there is no specific amount set aside for the treatment of any injury to any of the labourers. So that is our utmost desire - that a separate area should be demarcated and set-up specifically for the glass bangles industry. Without bangles, (the festival of) Eid would not feel complete. That's why I decided to come and get bangles.\"\u003cbr/\u003e37. Pan across bangle market store\u003cbr/\u003eThey come in all kinds of colours and are in high demand as the Islamic festival of Eid approaches. \u003cbr/\u003eGlass bangles are a must-have accessory right now in Pakistan.\u003cbr/\u003eBut, generally, sales are not what they used to be - threatening an industry which has long been a part of the country's culture.\u003cbr/\u003eMaking bangles from scratch the traditional way.\u003cbr/\u003eThese workers at the \"Kiran Glass\" factory in the Pakistani city of Hyderabad are producing the latest batch of fashion accessories.\u003cbr/\u003eIt's hot and dirty work.\u003cbr/\u003eThe manual process starts with recycled glass being shovelled into a furnace at temperatures as high as 1,400 degrees Celsius. \u003cbr/\u003eOnce fired, the molten glass is then picked out using long pipes and beaten into an oval-shape to ensure the dimensions are equal.\u003cbr/\u003eThen, in a second furnace, it is wound around a roller - leaving completed bangles ready to be cut and separated. \u003cbr/\u003eThe bangle business is a major player on the jobs scene in this city. \u003cbr/\u003e\"Around 25 to 30 people work at an average glass bangle factory. There are very skilled craftsmen and they even design names on these bangles.\"\u003cbr/\u003eDespite the nature of the work, bangle factory workers are not given any safety equipment such as protective gloves. \u003cbr/\u003eCramped operating spaces mean that workers often are often close to pipes laden with molten glass. \u003cbr/\u003eFor Shahid Hussain, making glass bangles is a way of life. \u003cbr/\u003eNow in his late forties, he's been working in the industry for almost 22 years now.\u003cbr/\u003eHussain excels at turning broken shards of glass into immaculately shaped bangles.\u003cbr/\u003eBut it's not lucrative work.\u003cbr/\u003eDespite his skills and experience, he still struggles to earn enough to feed and educate his five children. \u003cbr/\u003eHe also worries about the health risks of his work. \u003cbr/\u003e\"We do not have access to any health facilities as such. Another reason is that the work not only takes place in factories but also at homes, thus providing employment to a large number of people.\"\u003cbr/\u003eBut home working - the colouring, sorting and packaging of bangles - means the industry is not recognised by the Pakistani government.\u003cbr/\u003eSo there is no state support for those taking a job making bangles and there is no specific lobby group to look out for the business. \u003cbr/\u003eThe introduction of sales tax almost killed off the surviving bangle factories.\u003cbr/\u003eBut Hyderabad's chamber of commerce is stepping in to help:\u003cbr/\u003e\"We want the government to facilitate the glass bangles industry by providing them a separate area.. like there are industrial estates or zones. Similarly, there should be an estate for glass bangles, where entire families can live; where bangles can be made. There should also be a hospital, school, college, etc, in the same area so that children can also get educated even if they are working. And there should also be vocational training,\" says Khoja. \u003cbr/\u003e\"That is our demand from the government: to set-up a specific zone where only glass bangles are made.\"\u003cbr/\u003eIn the meantime, producers are enjoying the buoyant Eid sales.  \u003cbr/\u003eIn Karachi, people are flocking to shops to get their hands on the colourful creations - with bangles from Hyderabad selling at a premium.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I'm here to purchase bangles for my daughters because it's such a pivotal part of our tradition.
