Well, I didn't begin the process by thinking what can I make? I began the process politically. What can I do politically to affect change outside of political process? I believe in the universal access to the firearm. And so I chose this technology to affect its reality. I'm not interested in making anything else.\"\u003cbr/\u003e10. Wilson at his desk, working on computer\u003cbr/\u003eA group in the US is claiming to have created downloadable weapon parts that can be built using the increasingly popular new generation of printer that uses plastics and other materials to create 3D objects with moving parts.\u003cbr/\u003eThe fact that it's possible to download a gun's design plans to your computer, build it on a three-dimensional printer and fire it minutes later is concerning US gun control advocates amid discussions how to reform the country's legislation in the wake of the Connecticut school massacre.\u003cbr/\u003eThe group, called Defense Distributed, claims it fired a semiautomatic AR-15 rifle - one of the weapon types used in last week's shooting - which was built with some key parts created on a 3D printer. \u003cbr/\u003eThe gun was fired six times before it broke.\u003cbr/\u003eNo independent observer was there to verify the test, but federal firearms regulators say they are aware of the technology's gun-making potential, although they do not believe an entire weapon has yet been made.\u003cbr/\u003eCody Wilson heads the \"Wiki Weapons\" project for Defense Distributed, which aims to generate a freely-distributed, open source design for a 3D printed weapon.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says that the new technology, easily accessible and easy to use, will soon make it impossible to regulate firearms.\u003cbr/\u003e\"What I'm doing is showing people 'OK, this is something that can be done right now with this technology',\" the University of Texas law student explains.\u003cbr/\u003eEven with gun control pushed to the top of the national political conversation, Wilson is steadfast about reaching his goal of making a fully downloadable gun. \u003cbr/\u003eThis weekend, he and his partners plan to print four new lower receivers - the part of the gun that includes the trigger, magazine and grip. \u003cbr/\u003eHe keeps three of these AR-15 parts in his tidy student apartment in Austin, Texas.\u003cbr/\u003eWhile saddened by the Connecticut school killings, Wilson says that protecting the constitutional right to bear arms by giving everyone access to guns is more important in the long term than a single horrible crime.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I believe in the universal access to the firearm. And so I chose this technology to affect its reality. I'm not interested in making anything else,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003eWilson acknowledges there still are many technical hurdles to creating a complete gun from a 3D printer and has provided no estimate on when his goal might be reached.\u003cbr/\u003eOn top of that, there's the issue of obtaining a legal permit allowing the group to make and manufacture firearms.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We're not licensed firearm manufacturers. Because it's illegal,\" Wilson says.\u003cbr/\u003eEarly schematics created by Wilson's group were posted on Thingiverse, a New York-based website that serves as a hub for 3D printing aficionados. \u003cbr/\u003eAfter the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, Thingiverse took down the links, but Wilson says the group has already posted the links on its own website.\u003cbr/\u003e3D printing technology was developed for the automobile, aerospace and other industries to create product prototypes from the same hard plastics used in toys like Lego. \u003cbr/\u003eHobbyists mainly use the printers to design Christmas ornaments, toys and gadget accessories.\u003cbr/\u003ePrices on the machines have fallen as the consumer market grows and low-end 3D printers can now be purchased online from between 1,500 and 4,000. \u003cbr/\u003eThe more high-end printers needed to make gun parts are still priced from 10,000 US dollars and up.\u003cbr/\u003eA spokeswoman for the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, which helps enforce gun laws, says the agency is familiar with Wilson's project. \u003cbr/\u003eShe noted there is nothing illegal about making many types of guns at home, but exceptions would be high-powered weapons like machine guns and those not detectable by airport scanners.\u003cbr/\u003e\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003c/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv
