Muslim month of Ramadan, a day which is also the eve of the Jewish New Year. \u003cbr/\u003eThousands of Muslims held Friday prayers at Jerusalem's Al Aqsa compound, one of Islam's holiest sites, also home to the golden-topped Dome of the Rock shrine. \u003cbr/\u003eThe mosque has room for as many as 300-thousand worshippers. \u003cbr/\u003eFriday is the Muslim day of worship and is marked by large communal prayers, especially during Ramadan. \u003cbr/\u003eIsrael has loosened restrictions governing who can enter Jerusalem from the West Bank to allow Palestinian men over 50 and women over 45 to enter, as well as Palestinians with special permits. \u003cbr/\u003eThe restrictions do not apply to Palestinians who live in east Jerusalem, who hold Israeli residency rights, or Muslim citizens of Israel, according to Israeli police.\u003cbr/\u003eUnder usual Israeli restrictions, only Palestinians with permits are allowed to enter Jerusalem from the West Bank.\u003cbr/\u003eFriday prayers since the start of Ramadan have gone on peacefully, but police said that security measures would remain in place throughout Ramadan, which this year could end on September 19. \u003cbr/\u003eSecurity was also high at 300 Crossing, between Bethlehem and Jerusalem, West Bank, and Qalandiya checkpoint, between Ramallah and Jerusalem, West Bank.\u003cbr/\u003eMeanwhile, at the lively open air Mahane Yehuda market in central Jerusalem, Jewish shoppers scrambled to stock up on food before the two-day holiday of Rosh Hashana, or the Jewish New Year.\u003cbr/\u003eRosh Hashana is followed ten days later by Yom Kippur - the Day of Atonement and is traditionally a time for taking stock of spiritual and cultural values. \u003cbr/\u003eIn a routine measure, the Israeli military ordered a closure of Israel's borders with the West Bank and Gaza over the holiday, when packed synagogues, beaches and parks in Israel are seen as being particularly vulnerable to attack.\u003cbr/\u003eJewish families celebrate Rosh Hashana by eating apples and honey and other traditional foods symbolising sweetness and prosperity. \u003cbr/\u003eThe eve of the holiday this year falls on the same day as the last Friday of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, so as Jews sit down for festive family dinners, Muslim families also gather for a special meal to end the day of fast and start preparing for Eid-el-Fitr
