Exterior of New York Times\u003cbr/\u003eThe New York Times newspaper editorial board has endorsed Democratic Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton and Senator John McCain, of the Republican party, in the presidential primary race.\u003cbr/\u003eIn editorials posted Thursday on the newspaper's Web site, the board argued forcefully on Clinton's behalf, while saying that McCain was the best of a flawed field with which the board had \"strong disagreements.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe board said its case for Clinton was based on more than her accomplishments, adding that the senator \"sometimes overstates the importance of resume.\"\u003cbr/\u003e\"Hearing her talk about the presidency, her policies and answers for America's big problems, we are hugely impressed by the depth of her knowledge, by the force of her intellect and by the breadth of, yes, her experience,\" it said.\u003cbr/\u003ePatrick Egan, Assistant Professor of Politics at New York University, said newspaper endorsements, even from an influential paper like the Times, didn't have a huge impact on the election.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Endorsements influence very small share of voters. But really what's happening here, certainly for both Clinton and McCain, an endorsement of a newspaper like the New York Times helps to contribute to the sense of inevitability of their candidacies,\" said Egan. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Times board also spoke favourably of Senator Barack Obama, another Democratic hopeful, calling him \"incandescent,\" but concluded that \"we need more specifics to go with his amorphous promise of a new governing majority, a clearer sense of how he would govern.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe board wrote that it disagreed forcefully with the leading Republican candidates on Iraq, the economy and their support of President George W Bush.\u003cbr/\u003eBut McCain, the editorial said \"is the only Republican who promises to end the George Bush style of governing from and on behalf of a small, angry fringe.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSenior Fellow at The Brookings Institute, Stephen Hess, said the Times endorsement could possibly count against McCain among conservative Republicans.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Since the New York Times is so clearly a liberal newspaper, or its editorial page is so clearly liberal, on the Republican side it could even work against John McCain.
