Sula wines, India's leading wine makers, have set up a California style winery here with an adjacent chateau overlooking Gangapur Lake just outside Nashik. \u003cbr/\u003eIf making wine in a tropical climate seems a challenge, it is. \u003cbr/\u003eThe summer growing season in India tends to be very hot and prone to monsoons. \u003cbr/\u003eThe heat and humidity of India's wine region dictates many of the choices that are made in the vineyards. That's why the growing seasons are opposite to European culture. \u003cbr/\u003eThe harvest here is in February, before it gets too hot and rainy. \u003cbr/\u003eThe chief botanist in Sula explains that the monsoon is the main challenge, because it brings the feared mildew. \u003cbr/\u003eTo monitor the onset of the disease, the vine rows are dotted with rose bushes. \u003cbr/\u003eThe flowers would be the first affected, therefore indicating the need for treatment. \u003cbr/\u003eVineyards are planted at higher altitudes along slopes and hillsides to benefit from cooler air and get some protection from the wind. \u003cbr/\u003eThe chief winemaker explains that because Nashik is 600 metres above sea level, if you plant suitable varieties such as the Sauvignon Blanc grape, then your crop is more likely to survive.\u003cbr/\u003eWine consumption in India is still quite marginal, making up 1 per cent of total alcohol sales by volume. \u003cbr/\u003eAbout 1.2 million cases of wine are consumed annually (figures according to Sula vineyards) , but the national alcohol diet is heavily skewed in favour of beer and spirits. \u003cbr/\u003eA protectionist taxation policy from some states such as Maharashtra didn't help. \u003cbr/\u003eThe cheapest bottle of ordinary or indifferent Indian wine costs 400 rupees ($ 8). An imported bottle is considerably more. \u003cbr/\u003eRajeev Samant, the Chief Executive Officer of Sula, is a Stanford educated engineer who came back home to India ten years ago with what he says people thought was a crazy idea. \u003cbr/\u003eRajeev is very proud of the reserve Shiraz, which came out ahead of French wines in a blind tasting . \u003cbr/\u003eToday, Sula Wines contributes 250,000 cases of wine to India's one million plus consumption total, helping spark a wine revolution that has seen consumption grow at 25% annually. \u003cbr/\u003eThe wine-makers are already drawing in the crowds. \u003cbr/\u003eOn a typical weekend, Sula has something upwards of 500 guests visiting the vineyards. \u003cbr/\u003eNowadays, wine is appealing more to women.\u003cbr/\u003eThis Californian woman says \"Indian wines are more recent but they have improved a lot over the past few years\". \u003cbr/\u003eAnother big player in the wine arena is the Indage group, the first to produce a sparkling wine in India akin to Champagne.\u003cbr/\u003eChateau Indage's well-stocked wine bar at Nashik also has a lengthy Indian food menu with a pairing list. \u003cbr/\u003eThis helps
