in recent years by friction between the two biggest emitters, China and the United States.\u003cbr/\u003eThe US has long refused to join the rest of the industrialised world in the Kyoto Protocol, the 1997 climate treaty adjunct that mandated modest emissions reductions by richer nations. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Americans complained it would hurt their economy and it exempted such emerging economies as China and India.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Chinese have resisted pressure from the US and others in recent years to take on binding commitments not to reduce, but to limit the growth in their emissions, saying they were still too poor to risk slowing down their economy.\u003cbr/\u003eThe election of a Republican majority in the US House of Representatives in the November 2 elections has made it all but impossible for at least two years that any US legislation would pass to cap carbon emissions, essential for drawing other nations into a new, more stringent pact to succeed Kyoto, which expires in 2012.\u003cbr/\u003eMany Republicans dismiss scientific evidence of global warming, and fought against Democrat-sponsored energy legislation for the past two years.\u003cbr/\u003eMeanwhile, Greenpeace in Mexico was using the Cancun climate summit to promote sustainable logging by indigenous peoples in their traditional environments.\u003cbr/\u003eGreenpeace is supporting local indigenous groups in the Zona Maya, a 700 square kilometre expanse, to sustainably log the rainforest while preventing deforestation.\u003cbr/\u003eHector Magallon, who heads the Greenpeace outreach programme, said
