VS 'Aida' performance in Verona Collosieum\u003cbr/\u003eItalian tenor SALVATORE LICITRA, touted as the natural successor to Luciano Pavarotti, has released his first classical album of arias.\u003cbr/\u003e'The Debut' showcases the talent that won over fans at New York's Metropolitan opera in May 2002.  The tenor was not due to make his Met debut until the 2004-5 season, but stepped in on short notice to cover the ailing Pavarotti, as Cavaradossi in Puccini's 'Tosca.'  Pavarotti had fallen ill during rehearsals, and pulled out of the performance just one hour before the May 11th curtain.\u003cbr/\u003eLicitra  won a standing ovation from a long sold-out house expecting Pavarotti's likely final performance, while another 3,000 fans watched on a big screen outside. \u003cbr/\u003eReviews in the press were glowing - the New York Times called the night 'the starry anointing of a potential successor,' while The New Yorker described Licitra as 'like an ideal blend of the two mega-tenors, echoing both Pavarotti's fluency and Domingo's fire.'\u003cbr/\u003eFilm fans may also already be familiar with Licitra's voice - he provided the singing voice of John Turturro's character in 'The Man Who Cried', also appearing on the soundtrack CD.\u003cbr/\u003eHis new collection, released in July, features favourite arias from Verdi and Puccini, featuring the two 'Tosca' arias that won him so much acclaim at the Met - 'Recondita armonia' and 'E lucevan le stelle'.  Others include 'Nessun dorma' from 'Turandot,'; 'Che gelida manina' from 'La Boheme,' 'Celeste Aida' from 'Aida' and Di quella pira' from 'Il Trovatore.'\u003cbr/\u003eLicitra describes 'The Debut' as a sort of business card, showing off his vocal range.\u003cbr/\u003eLicitra discovered his talent by accident. When he was 18 years old he took a summer job as a graphic artist in Sicily.  His parents came to visit and overheard him singing along to the radio.  At his mother's request he began working with a singing teacher to build on his voice - only to find a few years later his natural talent had been almost destroyed.\u003cbr/\u003eLuckily he came to the attention of veteran master tenor Carlo Bergonzi, who slowly helped him build on his own natural foundation.\u003cbr/\u003eHe began his singing career in earnest in 1998. He has since performed in La Scala, the enormous Arena of Verona and other prestigious opera companies around Italy and Europe. Over the seasons of the next few years he is due to make debuts in Paris, London, Munich and Chicago as well as returning to La Scala, the Arena of Verona and New York's Met.\u003cbr/\u003eWhile Lucitra explains he was an obvious choice to replace Pavarotti for the Met performance - saying the music fits his vocal range, and he had already performed the opera at La Scala - he makes a point of highlighting his respect for the star.\u003cbr/\u003eHe attributes Pavarotti with bringing operatic lyrical music to the world, insisting the famous tenor be recognised for his achievements.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd while the next few years hold the promise of international fame, Licitra is distinctly uncomfortable with the Pavorotti-style label of 'maestro.'  Instead he describes himself as a 'graphic artist who sings'\u003cbr/\u003eHis girlfriend  Priscilla Baglioni, the daughter of fellow singer Bruna Baglioni, is unlikely to agree, saying she fell for him at the debut of Madame Butterfly. She explains it was the way he behaved towards her, along with his looks that attracted her - and then she heard him sing: \"I thought 'mamma mia', and he has this voice too!
