Top shot of scene of blast with wreckage of a police car and debris littered over the ground\u003cbr/\u003e8. of wreckage of police car and debris, damaged souvenir shop behind\u003cbr/\u003e9. of investigators at the scene\u003cbr/\u003eOn May 1st 2013 Russian police say a bomb has exploded in a busy shopping area in the capital of the restive republic of Dagestan, killing at least two people.\u003cbr/\u003eA spokeswoman for the republic's Interior Ministry says there were also an undetermined number of people injured in May 1st 's explosion. \u003cbr/\u003eShe did not have details on the force or construction of the bomb.\u003cbr/\u003eDagestan is plagued by Islamic insurgents who frequently mount small attacks on police. \u003cbr/\u003eThe republic is home to the parents of the suspects in last month's Boston Marathon bombing. \u003cbr/\u003eOne of the suspects, who was killed in a shootout with Boston police, paid a long visit to Dagestan last year and investigators are probing whether he had contact with extremists there.\u003cbr/\u003eTwo explosions went off outside a court building in Russia's restive province of Dagestan on May 20th, killing at least three people and wounding about a dozen, officials said.\u003cbr/\u003eThe first was caused by a car bomb and the second occurred after police arrived on the scene in Makhachakala, the provincial capital, according to Interior Ministry spokesman Vyacheslav Gasanov.\u003cbr/\u003eHe said the second blast caused all the casualties.\u003cbr/\u003eInvestigators said it appears that both explosions were set off by remote control.\u003cbr/\u003eTwo separatist wars in Chechnya have killed tens of thousands of people and spawned an Islamic insurgency that has engulfed the entire region, mainly neighboring Dagestan.\u003cbr/\u003eDeadly attacks on police and federal officials occur almost daily.\u003cbr/\u003eA female suicide bomber blew herself up in the southern Russian region of Dagestan on May 25th injuring at least 18, including two children and five police officers, police said. \u003cbr/\u003eThe attacker was later identified as a widow of two radicals linked to insurgency that were killed by security forces.\u003cbr/\u003eThe bomber detonated an explosives-laden belt in the central square in the provincial capital, Makhachkala, a Dagestan police spokesman said.\u003cbr/\u003eThe woman was identified as Madina Alieva, 25, who married a man who had links to insurgency and was killed in 2009. \u003cbr/\u003eShe then married another radical who was gunned down last year, the police spokesperson said.\u003cbr/\u003eSince 2000, at least two dozen women, most of them from the Caucasus, have carried out suicide bombings in Russian cities and aboard trains and planes.\u003cbr/\u003eAll were linked to an insurgency that spread throughout Dagestan and the predominantly Muslim Caucasus region after two separatist wars in neighbouring Chechnya.\u003cbr/\u003eThe bombers are often called \"black widows\" in Russia because many are the widows, or other relatives, of militants killed by security forces.\u003cbr/\u003eMilitants are believed to convince \"black widows\" that a suicide bombing will reunite them with their dead relatives beyond the grave.\u003cbr/\u003ePolice said two of the people injured in the attack were in critical condition. There were no details about the injured children.\u003cbr/\u003eDuring the previous week, a double explosion in Makhachkala killed four civilians and left 44 injured, while three security officers and three suspected militants have been killed in other incidents. \u003cbr/\u003eOne of the devices was in a parked car and the other was placed in a rubbish bin.\u003cbr/\u003eAlthough Chechen separatists were battered almost a decade ago, militants continue to move through the region's mountains and forests with comparative ease despite security sweeps by federal forces and police under
