Wide shot saw players and Natalia Paruz taking a bow
An unusual music festival has taken place in the New York borough of Queens.
Taking centre stage .....the saw.
The carpenter's tool is being used by a growing number of musicians to create unique haunting melodies.
'Cutting edge' instruments brought musicians from around the world to Trinity Church in Queens, New York for the 6th Annual New York City Saw Music Festival.
The festival was organised by Natalia Paruz who is also known as "the Saw Lady".
Paruz has played music on a carpenter's saw for over ten years.
She has performed with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Zubin Mehta and made her Carnegie Hall debut as a musical saw soloist in 2007.
Israeli-born Paruz says when the festival first began six years ago it was simply five people playing the saw in her apartment in Queens.
This year 28 musicians from around the world took part in the event.
A cello, violin or bass bow and steel saw blades are needed to create the distinctive voice-like quality of saw music and there is no formal playing technique.
Paruz says that some people play seated and others prefer standing or kneeling.
Nicholas Bardach is a professional percussionist from Bochum, Germany.
He says that each saw musician creates a unique and distinctive sound, even with the same instrument.
Bardach taught himself to play in 1988 when the orchestra he was performing with needed a saw player for a piece.
Since no one was trained to play the saw Bardach stepped up and offered to give it a try.
He is now considered a master of the musical saw.
Bardach performed a series of classical music compositions for the saw including George Bizet's "Carmen".
There has been some controversy as to whether a musical saw player should be called a "sawist" or a "sawyer".
According to Paruz, a "sawist" is the best title since technically a "sawyer" is someone who cuts wood.
Paruz says saw playing is believed to have begun about 300 years ago when carpenter saws began to be made of steel.
Woodcutters and lumberjacks are believed to have discovered the music quite by accident when they dropped their tools and heard unusual sounds.
Steel construction is important for creating the unique sound and even though saws are stainless steel, they do rust.
Paruz says she often has to take sandpaper to her saw to keep it in good shape as rust would interfere with the the quality of the sound.
She says that the secret to the best sound, is a long saw made from the best material.
Paruz says she enjoys pairing the musical saw with other unusual instruments and she played the number "Gymnopedie" by Erik Satie accompanied by the Trinty Hand Bell Choir.
The youngest player at the festival picked up the saw when he was only 13 years-old.
17 year-old Sharif Vakili was already a viola and piano player when he heard the saw being played by one of his music teachers and he knew he had to give it a try.
Vakili says his parents were a bit concerned he would injure himself playing with a saw but he admits to only two minor mishaps over his saw-playing career.
He performed a solo at the festival, playing the traditional English folk song "Greensleeves".
The musical saw is used not only in classical music but also in other genres like folk and blue-grass.
Adam Wirtzfeld came from Minneapolis, Minnesota to represent his blue grass band at the festival.
Martin Zak of the Czech Republic played the harp while Ivan Stiles of Phoenixville, Pennsylvania played "Amazing Grace" on the saw.
The weekend festival concluded with "A Chorus of Saws" - 22 saw players from beginner to professional taking the stage to perform "Ave Maria by Franz Schubert and "Over the Rainbow" by Harold Arlen
Natalia Paruz has recorded music for Capitol Records,
