Conference president Pinchas Goldschmidt told...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eThe Conference of European Rabbis has called on Germany's Jewish community to continue circumcising baby boys, despite a regional court ruling that the practice amounted to bodily harm. \u003cbr/\u003eConference president Pinchas Goldschmidt told reporters on Thursday that they had been assured that the ruling set no national precedent and that the government was looking into possible changes to the law to continue to clarify the issue.\u003cbr/\u003eHe called on the Jewish community to continue circumcising boys in the meantime. \u003cbr/\u003e\"I don't think that today there is a quasi-ban of circumcision in Germany, but it is an attack on circumcision, a big attack on circumcision,\" said Goldschmidt, who is also the chief rabbi of Moscow. \u003cbr/\u003eHe was speaking after an emergency meeting of some 40 rabbis in the German capital, called to discuss the ramifications of the Cologne state court ruling. \u003cbr/\u003eThe ruling raised fears among the Jewish community that they could be prosecuted if they circumcise their sons. \u003cbr/\u003eGoldschmidt called circumcision the foundation of the Jewish faith, and said the ruling also raised wider questions about religious freedom in Europe. \u003cbr/\u003eCiting France's ban on the face-covering Muslim veils and Switzerland's ban on the construction of new minarets for mosques, Goldschmidt said he saw the court's decision as part of a wider trend to try and limit religious traditions. \u003cbr/\u003e\"I think that this is not only a problem for Germany but a problem for Europe,\" he said.\u003cbr/\u003eIn its decision, the court said that circumcising young boys on religious grounds amounts to bodily harm even if the parents consent to the procedure. \u003cbr/\u003eThe ruling came in the case of the circumcision of a 4-year-old Muslim boy that led to medical complications, and both German Jewish and Muslim groups have spoken out against it. \u003cbr/\u003eRon Weber, the spokesman for Berlin's Sehitlik mosque, said the Muslim community was concerned about the verdict, but that they were less affected than the Jewish community, \"who have an obligation to circumcise boys eight days after their birth.\"\u003cbr/\u003e\"Therefore we see the verdict in a more relaxed way, but still we are concerned about it,\" he said. \u003cbr/\u003eUnlike female circumcision, there is no law prohibiting male circumcision and the ruling isn't binding for other courts. \u003cbr/\u003eHowever, it could be taken into account by other German courts when ruling on similar cases. \u003cbr/\u003eFollowing the decision, German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle was quick to offer assurances that it would not mean an end to the practice, saying that the free exercise of religion was protected in Germany, and that included religious traditions.\u003cbr/\u003e1.
