Salinger to 18 year old Joyce Maynard was put up for sale at Sotheby's.\u003cbr/\u003eMaynard says she put the letters up for auction so she can send her kids to college.\u003cbr/\u003eSalinger, the reclusive author, is incensed by what he feels is a betrayal.\u003cbr/\u003eIt was a day of letter sales at Sotheby's in New York. \u003cbr/\u003eBut this auction had aroused greater interest than usual.\u003cbr/\u003eEarly on Tuesday, Sotheby's auction house sold  a letter by John Adam  to colleague Archibald Bullock, written three days before the signing of the Declaration of Independence. \u003cbr/\u003eThe letter sold for a remarkable 575-thousand US dollars. \u003cbr/\u003eLater in the day, a first-edition copy of Daniel Defoe's \"Robinson Crusoe\", published in 1719 sold for well over 100-thousand dollars.\u003cbr/\u003eBut the biggest surprise of the day was the enormous interest in 14 love letters written by author J.D. He's extremely reclusive and he just doesn't write anything.\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Bruce Gimelson, Buyer's Representative\u003cbr/\u003eIn 1972, the 53 year-old Salinger began courting Joyce Maynard.  \u003cbr/\u003eMaynard was only 18 years old and just finishing her freshman year at Yale at the time.\u003cbr/\u003eLater the two lived together, but the relationship lasted only nine months.\u003cbr/\u003eIn recent years, needing the money for her family, Maynard decided to sell the letters she's kept for more than 25 years. \u003cbr/\u003eMaynard, now an author herself, earned much criticism when she published excerpts of the letters in her 1998 book \"At Home In the World.\"\u003cbr/\u003eCritics may not have been interested in the letters, but many others were.  \u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English)\u003cbr/\u003e\"I think there has been a lot of publicity about the letters.   I think that couldn't have hurt the sale.  I think that also they are an extraordinary group of letters that I think that we put a figure on that had to be a little bit moderate because I think there has been nothing sold at auction by Salinger.
