Wide of Kirk walking away\u003cbr/\u003eThe United States filed a complaint on Tuesday with the World Trade Organisation that says China violated international trade rules when it imposed tariffs last year on US chicken exports.\u003cbr/\u003eThe tariffs affect an industry that employs about 300-thousand people, US Trade Representative Ron Kirk said. \u003cbr/\u003eThey ranged from 50 to 100 percent, a US trade official said.\u003cbr/\u003eThat means some Chinese importers paid as much as twice the price for US chicken.\u003cbr/\u003eKirk emphasised that the US wants to continue two-way trade between two of the world''s largest economies, but it must be on a level playing field.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The United States does not arbitrarily seek disagreements with China,\" he said . \"Trade between the United States and China can work for the American people when we insist that China live up to its commitments and play by the rules to which it has agreed.\"\u003cbr/\u003eChina imposed the poultry tariffs in September 2010. \u003cbr/\u003eIt said US chicken producers benefited from subsidies and were exporting their goods to China at unfairly low prices.\u003cbr/\u003eCountries are allowed to impose punitive tariffs to offset both practices, but US officials said China didn''t follow proper procedures when it imposed them.\u003cbr/\u003eThe case is one of several that US trade officials have filed against China this year at the WTO.\u003cbr/\u003eThe United States has also filed complaints about Chinese duties on steel products and its subsidies of wind power equipment.
